Communication Strategy

As a movement, we have a certain brand and image. We get to shape that through how we communicate and how we present ourselves.

Current strategy document

We already have a communication strategy (which I wrote a couple of months ago), but it lacks some important things:

- What are our takes on adjacent issues? e.g. Do we support deepfake policy?
- Which language do we use? What should we avoid?
- Do we use AI gen art? (no, we don't, but this is not written down here yet)

I believe a lot of what this movement is working on right now is emerging from the period where it was a minority opinion into the period where almost everyone understands the dangers and this can be a very mainstream issue.

Suggestions:

-Frequently remind yourself that concern for AI dangers and harms is mainstream. Watch and read mainstream sources and respectable and even famous people talking about it. Read AI Policy Institute and other polling to remember these beliefs are mainstream.

-Hold yourself to high standards for communications. Research and use best practices for whatever platform or medium you are spreading the word on -- that goes for language, tone, length, fitting into conventions on that medium (whether social media, email, street outreach). Use any hacks you can manage to come across as a normal, successful, respectable, chill (even better, attractive) person with a good personality. Just because this is an existential threat doesn't mean we can forget the many social proofs that people use to judge the value of messages that come their way.

We can say almost anything and get taken seriously and get people's investment of their time if we use the right attitude. This is a very mainstream issue and the public opinion is working in our favor. I think it's often our mental blocks that are our worst enemy (making us think we will be seen as weird, when what we are saying is reasonable and popular).

-Try to avoid the trap of assuming people won't care (maybe true in the past but not so much anymore) or that no one will listen, that we are like the person with "the end is near" on a sign on the corner. That might be true with e/acc community, but no one else sees us that way on average, and we don't need to think of ourselves like that. I try to avoid letting e/acc people damage my perception of this movement with their psychological warfare.

Good points!

However, I think the situation in the US is quite different from most non-English countries, from what I've heard. The catastrophic risks from AI are not discussed / taken seriously so much here (in the Netherlands / EU). Perhaps our comms strategy should to some extent be localized.

that's a great point! see what works in each region.
I think the political situation is different, too -- you might get more involvement from politicians in Europe but less acceptance from the public.

For Pause AI I suggest we treat localization to interest and other demographics equivalently to how we would geographical splits.

I've also been thinking of more clearly saying that PauseAI is not pushing to ban existing AI models. That has formally always been the case (our proposal never targeted existing models), but the vibes of the name "PauseAI" have always been misunderstood of pausing usage.
