PThe reason I suggested it is because it's something we did with early builds of the first game, The Forest, to avoid weirdness. Maybe superstition but my friend and I quit running into weird stuff again saving in that order. And we too always played side by side.

GEach player still has to save their own progress, so if steam cloud failed to synchronize the save could not have carried over
Pah, the plot thickens. That's probably what happened if he's using a different PC from which he saved from.
PThe players save client side, on their PC, the host is the same but saves the world as well as their character.
PIn other words, the players save locally, the game just knows it's tied to your host save.

PMake sure he has it enabled. And when he closes SotF, make sure Steam gives the notification that the cloud is up to date.
PActually... now that I've googled it for you.. I dont think Steam cloud is going to work.
PReading into it.. have your friend rip their save file from the cafe PC and put it on their PC. If you trust doing such things on a public PC (I wouldnt)
