2024 November SF AI Safety Summit - What we can do to help

Last week a new AI Safety Summit was announced by the US and UK's AISI. They don't call it a summit, but a "conference"
  • I think because they don't want to feel like they are giving the finger to France.
ut they obviously are. France was tasked to host the next AI Safety Summit, but they rebranded it to "AI Action Summit", removed all focus on safety and put an AI sceptic in charge. It's a tragic and embarassing decision.

But luckily, there are some adults in the room. AISI organized this event, focuses 100% on AI safety, invites all the AI Safety Institutes (except China), all the big labs, and a lot of ministers.

This summit is a unique opportunity for us. We can try to steer it in the right direction. I have three ideas:

Get China to join

For some (stupid) race-dynamics / politcial reason, China is not on the list. China was present at the very first AI Safety Summit, but they were missing in Seoul. I think they were not invited.

We may be able to play a role in this. I'll reach out to Yi Zeng. Maybe I should reach out to Ian Hogarth and Yoshua Bengio, too.

Protest then and there

It would be awesome if we could have a presence right there in SF! We have a lot of members there. It's a bit short-notice, but seems doable.

Mailing campaign to attendees

The ministers who will be there should be informed of the feasibility of a pause, the urgency of the matter and the severe risks from AI. We can play a role in this by reaching out to them
AISI is bringing together AI companies and researchers for an invite-only conference to accelerate the design and implementation of frontier AI safety frameworks. This post shares the call for submissions that we sent to conference attendees.
