Pause AI in Africa 2024, led by Narcisse Mbunzama, is set to take place from October 27 to November 1, 2024, during the African Investigative Journalism Conference (AIJC) in Johannesburg, South Africa. The initiative aims to raise awareness among journalists, researchers, and policymakers about the risks of unregulated AI development in Africa. Through targeted advocacy and direct engagement, the project seeks to promote a temporary halt on AI advancement until ethical and regulatory frameworks are firmly established, ensuring that AI technology benefits the continent while minimizing its potential harms.
