Rocket League freezes and goes into a black screen with a cryptic error CommandBuffer message

My log file shows 1000+ lines of the same exact line
command buffer completion error: Error Domain=MTLCommandBufferErrorDomain Code=4 "Ignored (for causing prior/excessive GPU errors) (00000004:kIOGPUCommandBufferCallbackErrorSubmissionsIgnored)" UserInfo={NSLocalizedDescription=Ignored (for causing prior/excessive GPU errors) (00000004:kIOGPUCommandBufferCallbackErrorSubmissionsIgnored), NSUnderlyingError=0x7fdde382d690 {Error Domain=IOGPUCommandQueueErrorDomain Code=4 "(null)"}}

For context: I was messing around with Rocket League video settings. Everything was working fine until I changed the anti-aliasing to (I think) the last option, and then my screen jittered a bit (saw some pink sections on the menu bar), and since then every change of the Rocket League video settings ends in a permanent freeze, and I also can't start free play — it freezes at the loading screen. How do I completely reset what I did to avoid this error?

Update: it kinda fixed itself but i'm not sure how. Maybe by trying to adjust the anti-aliasing to a lower quality, and then turning it off completely.
