How does cloud save work?

I know, probably silly question, but I can't seem to figure out how it works really. Is it just a matter of enabling it from within the tab in the game's settings and then picking up where you left off on another device? If that's the case, someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong. I have the launcher on both my PC and the steam deck. A game that supports cloud save uploads and downloads just fine, but I can't get it to where I can continue on my PCsteam deck. I enabled it on both devices and did an upload on the Deck where I have been playing for about 4 hours and the download on the PC to pick up where I left off, but I'm still not able to continue where I left off. I'm still only able to create a new game. I tried to the force upload on the Deck and the force download on the PC, and still nothing. Are there more steps I need to do? The game in question is "Tomb raider GOYT edition" that I got from GOG, and I haven't really tried other games. I can see how many hours I have played the game on my profile on GOG and also my saves .dat files are all there. I'd really appreciate any guidance or even a guide online/documentations I can read through, whatever helps. Thank you in advance

make sure the save path on both devices is set correctly

I just go with whatever the launcher chooses, as I don't know the actual path that needs to be used. I didn't even know there was standard path at all :/

there is no standard path every game is different

you can check to see if the path heroic auto detected is right by comparing the save paths on the pc gaming wiki For example alan wake 2's save location: https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Alan_Wake_II#Save_game_data_location

Ok, thank you. I'll mess with this site and the save locations and see what happens.

Ok, so this path thing is kinda confusing since I am running the launcher in linux and this is a windows game that is running through proton and the whole path is all over the place. I have a second drive that has a folder called "Heroic". This folder has the install path for all games, and also one folder inside that is called "prefixes" where all the games' prefixes are located. The site you linked says the path is what's in the screenshot attached. So I'm lost. There IS a path that points to my actual linux files system home direcotory, but I don't think this is working. So, I'm not sure.

the whole path is in one place 😛 its in your prefix there's a folder in the prefix called drive_c and it basically looks like a windows drive use that to follow the location on the wiki so the default location heroic puts prefixes is ~/Games/Prefixes your game's prefix drive_c folder will be something like
~/Games/Prefixes/<your game>/drive_c
~/Games/Prefixes/<your game>/drive_c
for wine/wine-ge
~/Games/Prefixes/<your game>/pfx/drive_c
~/Games/Prefixes/<your game>/pfx/drive_c
for proton %USERPROFILE% is a windows shortcut to C:/users/<username> so the path should be something like
~/Games/Prefixes/Tomb Raider/drive_c/users/<username>/Documents/My Games/Tomb Raider
~/Games/Prefixes/Tomb Raider/drive_c/users/<username>/Documents/My Games/Tomb Raider

That doesn't do it. This is the path I have /mnt/Games/Heroic/Prefixes/default/Tomb Raider GOTY/drive_c/users/kalzi/Documents/My Games/Tomb Raider/ And I have followed the same path on the steam deck, but replace "kalzi" with steamuser, that's all

that's correct, forgot to put default in there

Yup, it is not doing it. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. Do I now force upload from the one that has the progress and then do force download on the one I want to catch up? I have literally tried everything and it is still nothing. I even made sure both use the same version of proton

yes

Does the save folder have to be INSIDE of the prefix of the same game? because here are these two screen shots and tell me if that doesn't look correct

yes its inside the prefix that looks fine to me are you using flatpak

sunny-greenOP•5mo ago
No flatpak at all. I'm using the -bin version from the AUR

you probably want to post your heroic and gog logs after you upload and download the save and confirm the right files are in your gog account

sunny-greenOP•5mo ago
I do the uploads from the steam deck and the download from the pc

And here the ones from the deck

did you confirm the files on the gog server are the right ones? like download them from the web interface and manually place them in one of your pcs' prefixes and try
sunny-green
sunny-greenOP•5mo ago
I'll do that. Also, I forgot the steam deck downloads flatpaks only, so the version of the HGL on the deck must be a flatpak (haven't confirmed yet. I will) if that makes any difference.

conscious-sapphire•5mo ago
it shouldnt and thats expected ok well it will matter if you were accessing folders that the flatpak install doesnt have access to
sunny-green
sunny-greenOP•5mo ago
Then do I need to try flatseal/grant the launcher access through command line? What did the logs say? Anything of help? This is driving me insane. Lol

where is your prefix folder? if its in heroic's default location then its fine
sunny-green
sunny-greenOP•5mo ago
I don't use the default Heroic folder since I don't want the games to save on my home directory, instead, I use a 2TB sata ssd that is dedicated for games. I have created a folder called "Heroic" where all the games are installed, and then a folder inside of the "Heroic" folder for the prefixes. I also make sure each game installed goes into those two folders.

conscious-sapphire•5mo ago
your prefix and your game install directories are different post a log so i can see the paths

To help you, we need a game log. Please see the following images on how to get it.

Ok, so it just worked on its own. I was messing with my steam deck yesterday and decided to try other OSs which resulting into having to reflash it and start fresh. Now, all the saves work between my deck and the pc all of sudden. This was uncalled for :/. I appreciate your help and I'm sorry if I wasted your time on this nonsense.
