Bazzite Nvidia Open - VM installation issue
Ran into an interesting quirk: went to install in an unRAID (KVM) VM with the intention of just installing it with just a virtual monitor and without the Nvidia GPU passed through, the installer hangs during installation. If I do pass the Nvidia GPU as well as the virtual monitor it does complete installation.

The driver isn't present in the installer
They are both the exact same copy of Fedora's installer, just installing a different image that never runs as part of the installation
You might be able to install if you select troubleshooting and fallback graphics (in the grub menu) when you install with just the virtual monitor
Interesintly enough, I tried three more times, never got the error. Again, this was just with a virtual GPU, no physical passed through to the host. Guess it was a one off.
Same installer iso too
@METDeath hey mate. I tried to DM about it but just wanted to know what you had as your VM setup? I'm running into hanging issues too. Log is spitting out all of this junk haha
I also tried the alternative install method and it just hangs too
I should add some support info:
Using fedora template, like 8 cores, 32gig ram, 200gig of virtual space.
I've got a windows VM running no issue and I have experience installing Linux. First OS I've really had problems with
if you have already given the card to the VM, remove it, install first then add the card.
some nvidia cards really hate the fedora installer
@HikariKnight I do have the windows VM shutdown and not enabled. Does that help or do I need to go into the VM settings and change it to virtual for the install?
I understand you can only use the card on one VM at a time. I also isolated (stubbed) the GPU so unraid can't access either
no i mean just install normal bazzite-nvidia first without the physical gpu passed through just use a virtual gpu
once thats done then shut down and attach the physical gpu to the vm
only workaround i can think about if its angry at the card
Yeah I've been doing that and I'm getting that wave of errors and stalling.
When I go through the install file wizard I choose, Virtual machine, NVIDIA, KDE. I've tried gnome with the same problem
i dont use unraid but what is the virtual gpu set as (spice, vga, qxl, virtio, etc)
also have you tried the non nvidia image for the vm?
since you can just rebase the image after install
Machine: i440fx-9.1
Bios: ovmf
USB: 3.0 (qemu xhci)
Video settings
Only options are cirrus, qxl, virtio(2d) and vmvga (blanked out)
I used USB 2.0 I'm pretty sure I used VNC/QXL for setup, then once it was installed I switched it to SPICE instead of VNC to try to get clipboard working.
When I created the VM, I used the "SteamOS" template for the icon.
from the looks of it that should work
i would say try the non deck image and rebase 🤔
How do I go about getting the non-deck image?
I'll tinker around and see if that works
You tell the download page that you want a desktop experience, and that you have nvidia gpu?
When it asks what hardware I choose Virtual machine
I did download the desktop/NVIDIA/KDE version though too
virtual machine one is just plain bazzite desktop
essentially just amd/intel no gamemode
you can rebase after install to the image you want but i figured it would be the better version to try get installed in a VM first
Thanka for your help 🙂 Got it working in the end. I'm thinking it had something to do with setting the template to steamOS and ... We'll bring patient and letting the install finish. It was hanging at a step for a while and I thought it was hanging
not hanging on anything its installing, progressbars are just hard when you run a large action (plus not we who programmed it)
I used the SteamOS base as well.
