Unreal Tournament 2004 won't start in fullscreen

Having an odd issue trying to run UT2004. No matter what I try the game always starts up in windowed mode. This happens both when running with the latest ProtonGE in Heroic or Soda through Bottles, so it's not a problem with Heroic. Problem is, if I enable fullscreen in the game settings it changes the resolution, and if I try to use Alt+Enter all I get is an error sound effect (but it will work when going from fullscreen to windowed?). Can anyone else try and see if they're getting the same problem? I got it on two different computers so I'm a bit lost on what's causing the problem.

I should add, this is the GOG version.

Could potentially use Gamescope to run the game in fullscreen

nope, it still pops up as window

Are you telling Gamescope to run in fullscreen (-f option)?

yep tried running it on Windows and it stays fullscreen there so there's something about Wine that kicks it out of fullscreen mode I have also tried with enabling the virtual desktop but got the same result

how about changing the configuration file?

I did that, fullscreen start up is set to true, but it still ends up being kicked into windowed mode I don't know if it's the splash screen that forces it?

oh so before the game launches it shows a splash screen/image with the unreal tournament logo, so I don't know if that somehow messes up how wine handles fullscreen modes for now the workaround is to go to the game settings, dismiss the warning that the random resolution it set for itself when it got kicked out of fullscreen mode is invalid, manually enable fullscreen, and then re-set the (valid) resolution by opening the console and typing in setres 3840x2160 which is a hassle to say the least hmm installed it into a plain wine prefix, fullscreen mode works will try installing into a bottle with dxvk/vkd3d disabled to see if that's the problem nope a-ha I think it might be a proton issue after all yeah, so created a bottle using caffe runner (which is based on wine-staging) instead of soda (proton based) and now fullscreen works as intended is there a good place to report this bug?

you should check if the problem is proton or soda I guess, try using proton from steam, if the issue happens with that it's proton, if not it sounds like it's soda and then I guess you can report that on their github repo

well it happens with both soda and proton-ge provided by heroic yeah, also happens with both the steam version and the gog version if using proton-experimental Reported the issue on valve's proton github, closing this issue. Until it's fixed, use a Wine runner that isn't based on Proton.
