Cannot create or access save file while in game mode/game takes priority over steam overlay

As you can see, these are two separate issues which I am hoping have the same root cause. I'm trying to play my epic copy of Sonic Mania on bazzite through heroic, and in desktop mode it seems to work fine. If I launch the game in game mode though, I get an error that says "Unable to save data. Continue in no save mode?" and hitting yes gives an error that says "Sign out detected" and brings me back to the title screen. Furthermore, when I try using the steam overlay to close out of the game, on the menu where steam asks "Are you sure?", moving over to yes also sends an input to the game, which brings it in front of the overlay. Once this happens, I'm basically forced to do a hard system restart to get free. I should mention that I am installing my heroic launcher games on a secondary internal nvme ssd, which I had to sorta trick steam into recognizing. Steam games run off it fine, but I'm guessing that heroic games might need some additional finessing to play nice. I just generated a fresh log, I'll add it to the post after I restart my system

these all need to be changed you don't have an Nvidia GPU. you should not use Steam Runtime in game mode or when you have UMU enabled. don't use stock Proton

Dang I thought I already changed it to proton-ge yesterday at someone's suggestion to get it to launch in the first place I think I found the steam runtime setting and turned it off, where is the setting regarding nvidia gpus?

the nvapi shouldn't matter but even though make sure to enable umu in heroic advanced settings

--offline is in your launch command but you don't have offline mode toggled in your settings. try turning that on and off again you need to be online to use Sonic Mania's saves This also isn't the first time I have seen --offline there without the setting explicitly in the config list, and I don't know what the cause is

weird, I can't even find where that setting is. Is it in the heroic launcher settings somewhere?

found it and toggled in on and off, lets see if that fixed anything ok that seems to have done the trick thanks a lot you two : )
