High CPU temps but low cpu usage

running this mod makes my cpu temps jump from like 80-85c on the lowest settings possible, currently running minimal cpu impact and 128 lod render distance. the weird thing is that my cpu usage only reaches like 20% due to minimal impact settings which is normal, but then it still reaches pretty high temps, while other games that use way more like 60% of my cpu wont even reach 75c on my cpu Running a 4070 super paired with a Ryzen 9 7900x on singleplayer with sodium/iris/ferritecore/indium/lithium/starlight at 1440p if im standing still while all the lods around me have loaded only then do the temps go down and stay stable but its once i start running around loading new stuff that it just randomly skyrockets

for reference im aware a r9 7900x is known to run hot and is designed to run up to 95c but i dont really want to increase my settings knowing that even on minimal impact it reaches 80-85c so im frequently running into rendering issues due to low cpu load are there any specific settings that i should enable/disable to lower the temps

Reducing vanilla RD and vanilla simulation distance might reduce CpU load and decrease the temps Outside of that you would need a better cooler, but as you said even if your CPU hits 95c it does not mean it is thermal throttling as it is programmed to first hit that temp and only then think about what it is doing

vanilla rd is just at 8 same for sim distance thing is tho that no other game makes my temps go this high even when the cpu usage is higher than in minecraft with dh so idrk whats going on like ive been playing doom eternal recently and my cpu would sit at 60% usage but sit at 75c but 20% usage in minecraft dh and it jumps between like 82-85 at the lowest settings possible at 128 lod chunks so i feel like its not really related to my cooling but just me messing up some settings in dh

what cooler do you have installed

dark rock pro 4 air cooler should be plenty for this cpu
Skillnoob_
Skillnoob_2mo ago
yeah that should be enough for a 7900x

ye i think its just some settings that i need to change because no other game makes my temps go up this high

If you put DH on max load, what are the sustained temps after about 5 minutes of runtime?

ill try it in a bit i havent rly tested any cpu load setting above medium because i saw it go up to like 88 at medium

you can use something like HWInfo64 to get the average temperature

cant i just use afterburner for that?

probably

hm been flying around a bit on aggressive and it seems to cap at 84c but then lags crazy hard cause cpu is at max usage kind of weird how theres no gigantic temp increase now tho

probably because Its just a temp spike Happens with my 7800x3d as well, even though I have Noctua NH-D14, which is plenty for that cpu I can run cinebench all day on it and it won't throttle

ye been flying around for a bit in generated lods its completely fine but its when loading new lods that it goes up to like 85-87 on balanced which is fine i guess but its still a bit uncomfortably close to the thermal throttling limit its super playable this way but i really dont want to have to check my temps the entire time just to make sure its not suddenly going up to 95

Skillnoob_2mo ago
the thermal throttle limit isn't really harmful to the cpu you don't really need to worry about anything

ye true just a bit paranoid could also make my fan curve slightly more aggressive i suppose
Skillnoob_
Skillnoob_2mo ago
Thats not gonna prevent the spikes
elitetweet
elitetweetOP2mo ago
would that not help when generating new chunks
Skillnoob_
Skillnoob_2mo ago
I mean sure, but your sustained temps are probably fine as is
elitetweet
elitetweetOP2mo ago
right right ig im just a little bit too paranoid then lool

not used to seeing numbers that high das cool tho ill just mark this as resolved ty for the help and miki also yeah jsut tested it without dh and it reaches similar temps on regular 32 render distance so prob just a minecraft being a primarily single core game moment back to this rq the latest update + picking a different shader fixed this now its running on temps you would expect

check if the CPU is being hit on only 2-4 cores, maybe only 6 cores are at %100 usage and are running hot, where no other cores are being used that could explain the high temps but low usage

ooo thats a good one will check when im home

also last update but i changed out my ram kit and upped the speeds to 4800 mts from 3600 and it now runs way cooler than before, now the average temperatures i had last time are now my peaks lol its wild guess my old kit was bottlenecking my cpu in a way genuinely surprised how cool it runs now LOL it peaks at like 82c when that used to be my average when running this mod
