Failing to update Fortnite
everything has been fine the past few months but suddenly i'm just getting hit with Download Size is 0 with some tracebacks. I'm at a loss, tried re-authing and reinstalling but makes no difference.
I can no longer update nor install Fortnite, could this be a CDN issue?

Bro, everyone who uses heroic has to wait until it gets fixed.
foreign-sapphireOP•3mo ago
Ok, however i did not see anyone else mentioning this issue. if anything i was wanting to confirm whether it was just a me issue
foreign-sapphire•3mo ago
I have the same problem, I can't update the fortnite.
foreign-sapphireOP•3mo ago
Sweet, honestly just knowing that relieves a bit of my stress
quickest-silver•3mo ago
Glad it's not just me, though I'm not getting an error message. Just a 'processing files' flash, and no update. Launching gives me the 'an update is required to continue' screen. Force update does nothing, verify and repair does nothing.
foreign-sapphire•3mo ago
Yeah, bro, I got the same thing. All I can do is wait.
quickest-silver•3mo ago
at least it's not us doing something wrong, and it seems to be an actual issue 🙃
foreign-sapphireOP•3mo ago
yeah that's what was driving me nuts for an hour. glad I reached out
sunny-green•3mo ago
i have the same issue btw if that helps
rival-black•3mo ago
same here
flat-fuchsia•3mo ago
man, the one day im free too
conscious-sapphire•3mo ago
have you tried forcing an update? game details page > 3-dots menu > force update
rival-black•3mo ago
yes
conscious-sapphire•3mo ago
from what I see in the legendary discord it's an issue with legendary, not with heroic, I don't know if something changed on epic's side and maybe legendary needs an update to handle that
foreign-sapphire•3mo ago
this is already funny i can't update the game all day

Same here everyone, i tried Force Updating and it didnt worked. Im just gonna use Epic launcher and detect my fortnite Location. Update and continue there until fix. Thanks for all the devs working on it.
foreign-sapphireOP•3mo ago
update should be available soon, a temp fix has been made and dev is alerted. Epic changed the install tags for fortnite
For those who want it back up and working manually through Legendary with the temp fix, here's what you can do:
Drop this file in your legendary
.config/legendary/tmp
folder (For window's users C:/users/<yourname>/.config/legendary/tmp
)
and run legendary install Fortnite --reset-sdl
. choose your addon tags like normal
bear in mind .tmp file will have to be replaced each time you need to update until update has been rolled outforeign-sapphireOP•3mo ago
if it's not wanting to cooperate, delete the .resume file in the /tmp folder. if still not wanting to cooperate, uninstall and start from scratch
Alphetix in the Legendary discord server put together this file with updated tags
other-emerald•3mo ago
how do you run
legendary install Fortnite --reset-sdl
on windows?foreign-sapphireOP•3mo ago
You'll need legendary, and to run it in cmd
edit: apologies renegade, but i'm not sure if i have the fortitude to explain how to use cmd, there's plenty of tutorials around
Yeah, that's exactly what happened
like-gold•3mo ago
Hm, it seems on my end I don't have the .config folder lol
oops, found it. it was in the same folder heroic was installed.
other-emerald•3mo ago
does that work?
national-gold•3mo ago
joined to say I'm having the same issue since updating the client
I use this so I'm not restricted by Epic's arbitrary download speeds
foreign-sapphire•3mo ago
the two solutions are:
- wait for legendary to update
- Do the above (if you cant do this, you'll just have to wait then)
plain-purple•3mo ago
if i uninstalled fortnite from heroic and reinstalled on epic can i just import the game into heroic and it'll work fine?
continuing-cyan•3mo ago
cant find the direction it says it doesnt exists
foreign-sapphire•3mo ago
what path did you use
continuing-cyan•3mo ago
C:/users/<yourname>/.config/legendary/tmp
that one
i placed my name and it didnt work
foreign-sapphire•3mo ago
replace <yourname> with your user name.....
go to your user dir and look for .config then
continuing-cyan•3mo ago
ingame username?
foreign-sapphire•3mo ago
you windows user name
continuing-cyan•3mo ago
ah let me see wich is it
continuing-cyan•3mo ago
maybe its because its on spanish?

continuing-cyan•3mo ago
is there any other way to look for the .config folder?
nope the folder is not there
either
help please?
ill just wait then
foreign-sapphire•3mo ago
its probably in the heroic directory tbh since you are using heroic which manages its own legendary install
i don thave windows so i cant really tell you where that is, but probably in the heroic config dir
stormy-gold•3mo ago
wow. It looks like Heroic specifies
--skip-sdl
when calling Legendary, so even if you put the file in the right folder, Heroic still won't update Fortnite.
Even after finding the right place of 'tmp' and legendary.exe, manually running it complains about missing auth, I assume due to the custom config location.
Guess I have to use the native Epic launcher todayextended-salmon•3mo ago
Heroic tells Legendary to use a different config directory so that it doesn't conflict with default Legendary installs.
First, drop the
Fortnite.json
in the correct location as listed above. On Windows with Heroic, Heroic's Legendary config is located at %appdata%/heroic/legendaryConfig/legendary
. You can copy-and-paste this into the Windows File Explorer's address bar and it'll take you to the right location.
Next, run legendary:
1. Open a command prompt window. This should be command prompt, not Windows Terminal or Powershell.
2. Copy and paste cd %localappdata%\Programs\heroic\resources\app.asar.unpacked\build\bin\x64\win32
. You can paste by right-clicking. This brings us to where Heroic's Legendary exe is downloaded to.
3. Copy and paste SET "LEGENDARY_CONFIG_PATH=%APPDATA%\heroic\legendaryConfig\legendary"
. You can paste by right-clicking. This tells Legendary to use Heroic's legendary config location instead of the default.
4. Run .\legendary.exe install Fortnite --reset-sdl
5. Run Fortnite
6. If Fortnite does not run, try force-reinstalling: .\legendary.exe install Fortnite --reset-sdl --repair-and-update --force
On both computers I ran this on, doing a reinstall fixed the issue and made Fortnite launch properly.
Edit: modified using the advice below to be significantly more concise. thank you!I'm not sure how to tell Legendary where its config folder is. Proabably an environment variable I'm not familiar withCorrect: (probably easier to add that one command to the steps instead of doing all the work of making a link)
continuing-cyan•3mo ago
now the game wont open
i dont get what i did wrong
is there any idea when will the update b e ready?
Did you try step 6 from the message above?
wee-brown•3mo ago
how would I undo the link from the previous instructions? I kinda just went and followed each of the steps in order and don't remember the old command
This'll delete the link only (trying to
del
it will delete the files its pointing to)
Alternatively you can delete it using the standard Windows Explorerwee-brown•3mo ago
oh you can just. delete the folder in file browser? that's safe?
the one that looks like a shortcut file
continuing-cyan•3mo ago
i dont even know where the legendary thing is
stormy-gold•3mo ago
Step #2 of Corecil's instructions tells you to use the
cd
command to move your command prompt to the directory where the legendary exe is.
That directory/folder is at %localappdata%\Programs\heroic\resources\app.asar.unpacked\build\bin\x64\win32
, which you can also open in File Explorer to look at the binaries.Note that you'll also need to set the config dir environment variable again
Basically follow the steps above, but skip steps 4 and 5
continuing-cyan•3mo ago
nope

continuing-cyan•3mo ago
tried both and it says it doesnt exist

continuing-cyan•3mo ago
nope the system cant find the specified route
stormy-gold•3mo ago
Just to be sure before we begin, you have placed the
Fortnite.json
file into the directory %appdata%/heroic/legendaryConfig/legendary
?continuing-cyan•3mo ago
uuuh no ?
i dont remember
no
stormy-gold•3mo ago
This message has the
Fortnite.json
file which you need to download and place into %appdata%/heroic/legendaryConfig/legendary
.You are missing a
cd
in front therecontinuing-cyan•3mo ago
i copypasted it the way it was sent i am sure of it
stormy-gold•3mo ago
I sent it without the
cd
included in that one previously.
But for this piece of the puzzle, you are placing the file into %appdata%/heroic/legendaryConfig/legendary
, no need to wory about cd
yet.continuing-cyan•3mo ago
like this?

stormy-gold•3mo ago
🤔
I think I may have messed up, but you are close!
continuing-cyan•3mo ago
uhmm okey
tmp
subfolder therecontinuing-cyan•3mo ago
this?

stormy-gold•3mo ago
Yep!
Sidenote, I believe the file is updated on the CDN already
So you won't have to do this step at all
https://api.legendary.gl/v1/sdl/Fortnite.json certainly looks like the above JSON file to me (although it's a little different)
stormy-gold•3mo ago
noooooooo! I thought it was still needed.
Do we want to remove the .resume file? I thought I saw something about that, but I am not sure.
So to sum up, what you need to do now is:
1. Open a CMD window
2. Run the following commands (ideally copy-paste them)
continuing-cyan•3mo ago
in moment
had uninstalled fortnite a few days ago and forgot to re install
continuing-cyan•3mo ago
like this?

continuing-cyan•3mo ago
IT WORKEEEED

fair-rose•3mo ago
this didnt work for me...i directly copy and paste them and nothing worked.
fascinating-indigo•3mo ago
it looks like this to me

fair-rose•3mo ago
i got it to work...do you need to do it a second time?
fascinating-indigo•3mo ago
no i dunno. it says that it got an Error when i tried the second time
Hm, strange. Try a
perhaps?
fair-rose•3mo ago
i try the first code and didnt work for me and givign the update screen still
fascinating-indigo•3mo ago

Make sure to run that in the same command prompt you used before
fascinating-indigo•3mo ago
so i copy paste both?
If you closed your original command prompt, re-run the first command above (
SET "LEGENDARY_CONFIG_PATH=%APPDATA%\heroic\legendaryConfig\legendary"
), then proceed with any other Legendary commandsfascinating-indigo•3mo ago
like this?

fascinating-indigo•3mo ago

Not too sure how you got into this situation, seems like the manifest (basically information on the game version you have installed) is missing. That should be impossible given you have installed the game
Try adding
--repair-and-update
to the 2nd command perhaps (so it ends with ... repair Fortnite --repair-and-update
)?fascinating-indigo•3mo ago
i'll try another time
decided to delete the game's folder to completely uninstall it. and maybe i'll try another time
Deleting the game folder alone won't uninstall it from Heroic. For that, run
(the
--keep-files
there is just to not have Legendary try to delete the already deleted game folder)
On the bright side, once you do that, you should be able to just install the game from Heroic normally. The migration to the new SDL tags is the problem, and that's only happening for game updatesfascinating-indigo•3mo ago
i mean i already uninstalled the game from heroic and said it was uninstalled but it wasn't so i deleted the folder
other-emerald•3mo ago
this worked thanks
harsh-harlequin•3mo ago
does rolling back to heroic version 2.16.0 will fix the issue? or is that an issue on fortnites end?
Fortnite slightly changed the way they distribute game files. You can only resolve the issue by following the pinned instructions
harsh-harlequin•3mo ago
or wait till heroic fixes it in general right?
I don't have plans to introduce any kind of automated fix for this
rising-crimson•3mo ago
Will this have to be ran every update?
You are not supposed to run that command at all. That was purely to clean up the remnants of the game on @Kalem's system
As for the pinned instructions (which you are meant to follow): No, they're a one-time fixup
rising-crimson•3mo ago
i replied to the wrong thing sorry
yeah i did the pinned one xD
thanks a lot mate
harsh-harlequin•3mo ago
is following the pinned instructions all i need to do in order to fix it? do i not need to download anything? cause some1 above said something about legendary launcher or smth.
is following the pinned instructions all i need to do in order to fix it?Yes
eastern-cyan•3mo ago
has this issue been fixed in the launcher normally yet or are we still temp fixing?
The fix in the pinned messages is the fix. It's a one-time thing that only affects old installs, so I'm not looking into implementing anything automated for this (even if I wanted to, I don't have an old install of this game around, so I couldn't test anything)
harsh-harlequin•3mo ago
@CommandMC i tried uninstalling fortnite thru heroic, it said fortnite got uninstalled but all the fortnite folders are still on my pc, i also tried uninstalling it with ur command i'm replying to but it says "%LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\heroic\resources\app.asar.unpacked\build\bin\x64\win32\legendary" uninstall Fortnite --skip-uninstaller --keep-files
[Core] ERROR: EGL ProgramData path ("C:\ProgramData\Epic\EpicGamesLauncher\Data\Manifests") is invalid! Disabling sync...
[cli] ERROR: Game Fortnite not installed, cannot uninstall!" but there is literally still all the folders on my pc. I was trying to uninstall cuz fortnite was also not detecting my manifest for sum reason same issue as the guy above had somehow.
do i just revo uninstall heroic and reinstall again? will this uninstall fortnite too? cuz what do i do from now on i just wanna reinstall fortnite with heroic and do your fix listed above
foreign-sapphire•3mo ago
uninstalling heroic doesnt remove the games you've installed with it.. and looking at the command you passed legendary, there's nothing to remove because fortnite was no longer registered as installed ..
Tbh judging by the command you ran, it wasnt going to remove the files anyway if it succeeded.. i suspect mostly you want to keep the files to avoid redownloading everything
First of all: For the next time you encounter any issues, please ask about them and then try to fix them with our help. I have no idea what "fortnite was also not detecting my manifest for sum reason same issue as the guy above had somehow" is supposed to mean, a manifest is what you use to install the game, an installed game doesn't care about its manifest. Whatever error you were seeing likely was fixable without completely removing the game
Trying to uninstall Fortnite while it's in the state the pinned instructions get you out of will lead to the issue you're experiencing (the game folder not actually getting deleted). Legendary will only remove files it knows are from the game install, and the old install tags are gone, so it'll end up removing nothing
The "fix" for this is just removing the folder manually (assuming you do want to remove the game) or simply importing the game normally (if you want it back into Heroic now)
harsh-harlequin•3mo ago
yeah that's my bad, thank you, but all good now just reinstalled the game and everything works perfectly now, thanks for your help :))
Right, bit of a nuclear option to just reinstall entirely, but that's fine
equal-aqua•3mo ago
So, I saw the pinned with the CMD Fix but, copying and pasting won't work apparently, soooo what's the fix for "just wanting to update the game on heroic"?
copying and pasting won't work apparentlyCopy-pasting them should work. If it doesn't, send in the output you get
equal-aqua•3mo ago

You're missing a line break between the two commands
It's
then
equal-aqua•3mo ago
Wait a minute, does this work with the portable heroic right? because CMD just said "system cannot find the path specified"
Those commands are intended for the standard (installed) version. You can still make them work with the portable one by launching Heroic, making a note of its Legendary location (should be one of the first lines in "Settings" -> "Log"), and then using that path in the 2nd command instead (you will still need to run the first command like normal)
Make sure to keep Heroic open while running the commands in this case
equal-aqua•3mo ago
Nice, got it to work, now, about the optional packs, If I had HD textures when I downloaded fortnite on heroic, should I install them again on the cmd or they will still be installed without adding them?
like, should I leave it blank If I only want to update?
You should specify the tags you want to install there
As the command you ran suggests, your selective download choices are reset, so you have to re-select everything you want
equal-aqua•3mo ago
Well, it kinda downloaded the whole hd models and the cosmetic streaming again
equal-aqua•3mo ago

equal-aqua•3mo ago
But opening the game tells me to update it
equal-aqua•3mo ago

equal-aqua•3mo ago
Also, checking if there was something else to install, it just says this
equal-aqua•3mo ago
