IPhone Immich initial sync stuck at 1 and 1% iCloud Download
I've been testing Immich for a couple of months and so far so good, but I've only been using Android phones. Just decided to try and increase WAF and get my wife's iPhone in the mix and it won't complete the initial sync.
All photos/video except for those in the last few days should've been pre-synced by the Google Takeout I did with her account, so honestly unsure of why Immich claimed to start with over 2,000 from the Recent album.
After fighting with Background App Refresh issues (which may still not be resolved), I ask her to leave the Immich app up overnight in foreground to let it run through the initial sync. This is what it got down to and I noticed the second "iCloud Download" percent bar stuck at 1% (for hours).
I could find anything on here related to that, so sorry if this has been addressed previously.

Information
In order to be able to effectively help you, we need you to provide clear information to show what the problem is. The exact details needed vary per case, but here is a list of things to consider:
- Your docker-compose.yml and .env files.
- Logs from all the containers and their status (see above).
- All the troubleshooting steps you've tried so far.
- Any recent changes you've made to Immich or your system.
- Details about your system (both software/OS and hardware).
- Details about your storage (filesystems, type of disks, output of commands like fdisk -l
and df -h
).
- The version of the Immich server, mobile app, and other relevant pieces.
- Any other information that you think might be relevant.
Please paste files and logs with proper code formatting, and especially avoid blurry screenshots.
Without the right information we can't work out what the problem is. Help us help you ;)
If this ticket can be closed you can use the /close
command, and re-open it later if needed. The app still has to go through the files even if already uploaded. The duplicate rejection is done on the server
iCloud Photos doesn’t play very well with immich. However this isn’t typical. My guess is that image may be stuck or corrupted for some reason. Can you find that image in her photo feed?
I will try
so the photo is not in Recents, which is the only album I've marked for backup. There's a photo on 12/3 and November -something-, but not 12/2.
So there is nothing on her phone either of us can find from 12/2. We did find photos in Google Photos from 12/2, which were deleted recently when she did a clean up space from Google Photos (before Immich backup was run). What's interesting is that her phone takes pictures in HEIC format, so the JPG must've been something she downloaded. There were two downloaded images (IMG_8290.PNG and IMG_8291.PNG), so it stands to reason that 8298 was also a downloaded/saved image.
We emptied Recently Deleted and confirmed nothing was in Hidden. I have no idea where it's getting the instruction to backup this file.

@Zeus any other ideas?
No
ok, I think I figured out the "why" but not yet how to fix it. My wife doesn't pay for iCloud storage, so, naturally, taking umpteen billion photos/videos, she ran out of her 5 GB of storage very quickly and paused iCloud syncing. This is "why" the iCloud Download thing is stuck at 1% (which IMO is actually stupid that because she can't upload to iCloud, she's prohibited from downloading, but hey, it's Apple, what do you expect 🙂 ). So, I turned off "Sync this iPhone" under iCloud Photos, but I'm not completely out of the woods yet. Now she's just stuck at uploading but no file name.

Sigh. I'm obviously tired. That screenshot indicates everything is synced with nothing to do. The solution was to turn off "Sync this iPhone" on iCloud Photos when uploads are paused because you're out of iCloud storage.
I'm currently doing Apple's version of Google Take Out for her iCloud Photos. Hopefully the resulting file is something immich-go can consume.
Thanks for the update. Im not sure if we can notice this issue more clearly in the app but its good to know
I didn’t know it would cause this
However Apple photos does a lot of mean stuff
ya, pretty crappy of them, and obviously they weren't gonna help figure it out 😦
