Save backup
Is there anyway to enable save backup? Even if not to the various stores, at least to a specified directory and allow access to where the offical save is located? I know this could be extra burden to implement but it would be nice to be able to game on my desktop or laptop and not have to restart on Stardew on each switch to a different device...

Also sorry for multiple forum posts but didn't see an existing thread that matched this or the other one. (that was recent and wouldn't be necromancing)

If the game supports cloud sync you can turn it on iirc
rare-sapphireOP•3mo ago
I mean yea ig there's that, but my thing is what about the others? Bc stardew esp afaik doesn't and I don't like having two diff saves on diff computers(ik there isn't crossplay or save transfers to phones either but that's something on the dev on that end)
(and I doubt luna support on gog is something that's free since I think my prime lapsed while I'm waiting for disability?)
rare-sapphire•3mo ago
Well if it doesnt support cloud sync then you cant auto sync between devices (at leaast not easily)
as for thee directory, I think you can find where the saves are on pcgamingwiki

Usually, Gog games have cloud save sync available, it is a beta functionality so you need to enable it manually. I mostly struggle with Epic Games ones as it is not so used. There is this website https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Home that you can look for mostly all games to give you the saves location.

also of note, linux builds of gog games do not have cloud sync
its a windows only feature iirc
but if you play the windows version in wine it should be fine
rare-sapphire•3mo ago
but, if you run through wine, it should work, right?
oke
it'd be nice if they added linux support
rare-sapphireOP•3mo ago
which is fine if it works bc oddly atp it seems wine versions of games work better than native. And most(if not all of my games) are older or indie on this side of things XD
future-harlequin•3mo ago
yes that is also true, generally the linux builds get stale and stop working esp if they relied on system packages rather than packing their own dependencies
and games often stop getting updates at some point, so eventually linux builds fail
rare-sapphire•3mo ago
i hope we will see games on flathub once it gets paid apps
future-harlequin•3mo ago
well this is one of the reasons steam has a linux runtime
rare-sapphireOP•3mo ago
which I"m totally fine w/playing through wine. I'm not picky like some people on linux tend to be. I'm just glad to have wine and have stuff working
future-harlequin•3mo ago
makes the package dependencies a bit more consistent
rare-sapphireOP•3mo ago
(tho I am miffed genshin is one that is a gray area of working >_>)
future-harlequin•3mo ago
yeah i agree wine is likely the best way to game on linux rather than linux builds of games themselves
rare-sapphire•3mo ago
does umu also do the same?
future-harlequin•3mo ago
not sure.. umu at the least provides the runtimes for proton to work
rare-sapphireOP•3mo ago
esp since proton and GE came around bc I love both. ANd I hate windows so much bc it'd make my pc obselete I'm sure atp w/the newest updates >_>
future-harlequin•3mo ago
cant say if it packs the linux runtimes for linux games
but even if it did that may not be what games from gog would expect since gog doesnt have steam linux runtimes either
rare-sapphire•3mo ago
but yes, if you play stardew valley through wine, you should be able to cloud sync it @rasstondimplewimple
rare-sapphireOP•3mo ago
well I'll be, luma works. So that's an option as much as I hate that bc my computer can run it XD
rare-sapphire•3mo ago
What is luma?
rare-sapphireOP•3mo ago
that amazon cloud service, I was able to link it and load up SV through that just now oddly
rare-sapphire•3mo ago
isnt that Luna?
rare-sapphireOP•3mo ago
oh whoops typo lol
rare-sapphire•3mo ago
I think flatpaks could be a way forward
rare-sapphireOP•3mo ago
uh where is this located bc I've looked in general and advanced and don't see it(I'm likely being blind tho bc I often miss stuff >_>)
future-harlequin•3mo ago
dunno any game devs that would ship on flathub, or even know htat it exists 🙂
rare-sapphireOP•3mo ago
Def, esp since snaps are awful and no reason to make games for linux natively if other methods make them work better anyway
statutory-emerald•3mo ago
When you click on game options, you should have a category for cloud saves

future-harlequin•3mo ago
if its not steam or gog or egs im not sure gamedevs would care really
rare-sapphireOP•3mo ago
(and I say that as someone who started on ubuntu but jumped ship when snaps were getting to be forced....)
future-harlequin•3mo ago
maybe indies
statutory-emerald•3mo ago
You have to tick the auto save box
rare-sapphireOP•3mo ago
oh well boo, bc that means it's game by game instead of launcher wide XD
granted, I should be used to that since I have to add obs-gamecapture to every game anyway
future-harlequin•3mo ago
yes it is also disabled by default because too many people break their saves
statutory-emerald•3mo ago
Yep 🤷♂️
future-harlequin•3mo ago
also its game by game because some games dont do cloud save and so this menu isnt even visible in those cases
statutory-emerald•3mo ago
You are not obligated to do that
future-harlequin•3mo ago
also the auto detected save path isnt always right
statutory-emerald•3mo ago
You can add
OBS_VKCAPTURE=1
to /etc/environment
to apply it globallyrare-sapphireOP•3mo ago
granted before I game anymore I gotta figure out moving my home directory to my OS ssd.....really need to figure out a secondary SSD once I get my first disability check too bc I'm sure this HDD is getting to a point where it's not gonna be viable and ssd's are a much better option than when I got the HDD lol
where? (and if there's a way for steam that would be amazing but I doubt it lol)
statutory-emerald•3mo ago
/etc/environment
, it is a file on your PC, it config the default env for users. And it should also apply for Steam.rare-sapphireOP•3mo ago
but wouldn't that apply it to all programs or am I just being stupid?
statutory-emerald•3mo ago
Yep, but it is greatly made and the plugin only detect games, I never add problems with non-game apps.
rare-sapphire•3mo ago
well once there are paid purchases then maybe, we will see
future-harlequin•3mo ago
unless there's outreach to studios probably not
no one in industry talks about linux let a lone knows what flatpak is
end of the day its possible but super unlikely.
