MYou could use a second USB adapter. With the Uno R3, you would use the SoftwareSerial library. The Leonardo may have hardware serial you can use.
KFlux makes it a lot easier. Also if you mess up, flux can fix almost everything. Experienced solderers will have no problems with THT with just the flux core of the solder. But if you bridge connections or just have bad joints flux will make fixing it very easy.
