Selvedge Denim - Topic of the day 4/18/25

The internet seems to have collectively learned about selvedge denim over the past month - what are your thoughts? Is it worth the hype (or cost)? Is it worth storing in your freezer? What are the best (and worst) brands of selvedge?

It’s funny that apparently selvedge denim is now “on trend” again lol - I blame Cowboy Crust. Basically every “premium” brand and their uncle has been making selvedge I feel like for years now. In the grand scheme of things I don’t think it matters and it’s also not the sign of great quality it’s made out to be. It’s a nice detail to have, mostly for yourself. Also please wash your jeans thanks.

i have 3 pairs of selvedge denim and i don’t wear any of them (probs gonna sell). would not pay that much money for them again, and my deadstock 70s jeans have been much more fun, and were a fraction of the price, and actually almost fit. i have long legs so its not like i have room to cuff them anyway. what’s the point then

Mf will disregard fit, wash, silhouette, and sizing of jeans just to have selvedge seams

I’ll be honest selvedge denim is sick as fuck and i’m not afraid to say it

Selvedge id can be a fun detail, would actually be cool to have on jeans that aren’t cut like shit! I think people being into it speaks to (best case) wanting to understand more about how your clothes are made but it’s just so easy to turn that into another thing to fetishize

Idk what seldvefge means and i dont care

But it’s also not all that it’s made out to be tbh. It’s lot like a shuttle loom is a mysterious implement whose function is lost to time. I dislike when people equate selvedge with quality. I know you don’t do or mean that, but it still sucks when people do.

Yah there is plenty of ass selvedge out there but there is also a lot of really good and unique stuff you cant find outside the niche

Basically I think it’s one of the last things people should be looking for when buying jeans. It doesn’t affect construction that much, you only show it when cuffing, and fit/size/material/wash matter so much more

It's not the selvedge that's important (though unusual selvedge IDs could be fun), it's the texture more often found in selvedge denim that's cool. If there's something interesting going on in the weft then selvedge looks better when cuffed

You really cant find the same variety in construction, dye options and all the other little details outside of selvedge. Its 100% a niche nerd ass thing to be into but there has never been a better time to be a nerd about jeans

Yeah for sure - like no one’s going to make persimmon dye jeans and then not make them selvedge. That would be almost weird. I also believe that selvedge doesn’t make a good pair of jeans but many if not most good pairs of jeans (at least in the raw denim sphere) will be selvedge.

Selvedge rips I love selvedge Cool lil stripy on my cuff? Fuck yeah Just like, buy good pants that are selvedge, not selvedge pants
pacific_north_dressed
I was about to disagree with you because I’m such a denimhead it’s unlikely I would buy a non-selvedge jean, but this is correct, actually Look for the fit and color and details you want first and then if it’s selvedge too, that’s great. Yeah I mean, Gustin and N&F exist

Holfram2w ago
Ew gustin is still around? You’d think they’d have gone bankrupt by now

There are so many Jean makers that make really cool dyes and washes that aren’t selvedge and I think limiting searching for selvedge denim only holds back how many cool jeans there are
Holfram
Holfram2w ago
That why I found it necessary to add the “raw denim sphere” qualifier - “all good jeans are selvedge” really only holds if you’re a raw denim dude and even then there’s Cowboy Cuts.

When I first got the raw denim bug I definitely cuffed them because I liked the selvedge ID. Couldn't care less now. Honestly don't think I'll look specifically for raws or selvedge but fit and comfort first. So many of the cuts are just ass.

Is this where I should post my literal pile of raw denim

After losing a load of weight last year, I got some cheap selvedge jeans from Uniqlo just so I would have something that fit and I could wear with anything, ended up falling back in love with raw jeans

When I’m home I’ll post the pic of the shit I’m giving away/selling (not on here don’t ask!) but the stuff hanging in this pic is like…1/8th of everything

I like that selvedge is highly correlated with nice fabric, and I like the cleanness of the selvedge ID for cuffing. That said, there's plenty of great non-selvedge denim. I have a pair of non-selvedge Sid Mashburn jeans in a beautiful indigo tone with plenty of slubbiness. It looks great. I

There's an interesting thread in Styleforum where Eva Kuhle at Epaulet talks about the limitations of selvedge. Because of the limited size of the fabric, there are limits to the types of fits you can develop https://www.styleforum.net/threads/lets-start-a-new-made-in-los-angeles-jeans-brand.799895/post-12179807

Let's start a new jeans brand
I picked these up. The shape is excellent. And there are other wide fits from the brand for SS25. Worth checking out if you have a Margiela store or stockist nearby. Cool, I'm going to check that out. I do think that a higher rise, wider leg would make the most sense. Outside of it being a...

i will say, i do love raw jeans, but idk if it’s about the fading potential, as i have never faded a pair. i just love the color and texture. they aren’t comfy and sometimes they drape weird and bleed indigo, but they are fun!!
pacific_north_dressed
I don’t have a single pair of jeans that is uncomfortable, do you wash your jeans enough or is the fit off?

love selvedge love raw but idk if it matters much it's like digs said, it's about the fact that often selvedge is gonna have more options than non. my orslow super dad's are non-selvedge but teh denim is cool as hell.
