Prospect of a public modded server in 2025.
Question is simple, how viable is it making a modded PUBLIC server, yknow, ones with ranks, anticheat a hub/lobby, ability to support a decent playersize and so on, I dont mean fabric servers which have compatibility with vanilla clients. but i also dont mean a full blown modpack with huge machinery mods like create. Somewhere in the middle, with mods like KubeJS and a bunch of dimensons. Can it really be done

Anticheat bye bye when doing modded, not really solid options afaik
not very
even custom modpack teams with the best hardware have trouble at higher playercounts
not to mention crate etc sucks for performance
Yeah there'd be no tech mods
ah i misread that
still not great
how much of a playercount could work
In one single world
no number
depends on so many factors
grim is coming to fabric iirc
Thats great news lol
Forge/Fabric evolved mainly for singleplayer or small servers
Bukkit/Paper evoled for the commercial side, so there's where you'll find stuff for keeping high playercounts and administration
Closest (i think) you can get is using a soft-modded solution like Nexo, Mythic suite, ItemsAdder, etc to somewhat emulate mods in a paper server, tho all the work of "creating the mod" will fall on your shoulders
yeah ik tht it's mainly for smaller servers but could it not be brute forced, like having a factions map being divided into 4 seperate servers ( Factions1,2,3,4)
I'll have to check Nexo out
First time hearing of it
Nexo seems to be paper/folia
Yh, the options I mentioned are for paper
With fabric I'm not sure how many players the server can hold, like pgdk mentioned, it depends on a lot of factors
Plain fabric with just lithium I think it can hold up to 30 players doing average gameplay, but idk for sure, I don't run fabric
Fabric are somewhat hard to be fully optimized, normally you can just pick some mods like c2me, lithium,...
But as far as I know, those mods only provides partial multithreading methods, pairing with other content mods and you'll find it even worse in terms of mspt.
So high player counts on these type of servers are not guaranteed
There is a very promising mod in the works called async which puts all entities on its own thread. Thats huge. Its already fairly stable. But modded always means a bit more crap to deal with compared to paper.
I've tried async for 1.21.1 Fabric, though the inconsistency and about 2-5ms higher mspt, I think its a pretty good concept
