Brands that “fit American”: J.Press, Brooks Brothers, what else?

Hi all! I brought a couple jackets of different nationalities to my tailor today. He recommended I stick to brands cut for boxy Americans (for reference, I am 5’6”, 175lbs, with a 19-20” yoke. I shoulder press close to 225 lbs). I wear a 42S jacket and 30-31 x 26 pants. I’ve brought him items from J. Press and Brooks Brothers before - the jacket he said was an example of a good base fit was J.Press. He cautioned against Italian brands (I also brought a Canali), as he said they’re either cut for slim guys (small shoulder sizes) or fat guys (big shoulder sizes) with little in between. My tailor is a knowledgeable guy who does great work, so I’m inclined to trust him. What other brands make good tailoring for boxy, short guys?

Tailor sounds like an idiot respectfully Only buying brands by nationality is one of the most ridiculous things I’ve ever heard Just look at product measurements before you buy

yeah, when I’m on eBay I’ll do that problem is shitty measurements by sellers but then again still better than guessing by brand

Brands also post size charts With detailed measurements

Cut differs from brand to brand. Some brands like to refer to slimmer cut suits as “italian cut” but this is just marketing bs. This is probably the source of your tailors statement As Art said measurements are your best friend

honestly even j.press has varying fits on their clothes while there's a distinction between "american tailoring", "british tailoring" and "italian tailoring" in terms of how the suits/jackets are cut there's not always a 1-1 correlation between style and country of origin if you have preferences in tailoring (hugging the body vs wider, structured vs unstructured shoulders, darts vs no darts, thick vs thin lapel, etc.) look for suits that match and check the measurements to find one that fits well (shoulder width, sleeve length); a good tailor should be able to do other alterations without fuss
