Significant Framerate Drops In-Game

Whenever I try entering a world (both singleplayer and multiplayer) my framerate tanks to around 30fps. Fighting the destroyer sends it all the way to 1fps and sometimes crashes the game.
I tried making sure my pc was using my graphics card when dotnet.exe is running with NVIDIA Control Panel after diving through some forums, but that hasn't fixed the issue. I'm not quite sure if I did it right or how to fix this past this point.
