Bad Chunk Loading and Stuff
i don't really know how to explain this issue well, but i've noticed that from not even very far away, some chunks just.. dont load properly?

and i found this reddit post that has a similar issue with a screenshot that could help i guess https://www.reddit.com/r/DistantHorizons/comments/1igvo88/dh_lod_wont_load_just_after_vanilla_render/

this is the screenshot the person took and my issue looks similar. i don't have to be very far for this to happen. it'll be all rendered in seemingly, and then i get close to the chunk/area and then that weird noisy effect appears and it re-renders it. it's extremely annoying and i have no idea what is causijng it

aside from that though there's slow chunk loading sometimes or like maybe not rendering as far as it could?

i don't know a whole lot about distant horizons but i've been wanting to use it for a long time and tried to before with other issues
i don't use chunky though
THERE is the effect

it'd be nice to know optimal settings in general for distant horizons but i cannot find anything anywhere

ugh it's so ugly
yeah i've tried looking all over the reddit and this discord and i don't really get it and i'm not sure it has to do with overdraw because it seems like chunks that aren't even far are getting affected but i don't know anything about anything so
like i feel like nearby chunks should load significantly faster than this when im barely moving and barely above ground

but i seriously mostly just hate this weird fading effect

This is overdraw
it.. is? its the default setting
i changed it to 0.5 too and it didnt really do anything
/overdraw
Q: There are holes at the edge of vanilla Render Distance, especially during movement
A: This is caused by either vanilla terrain not loading in fast enough, or shader's incorrect overdraw prevention implementation or configuration (if you use one)
Some world gen speed improvement can be found when adding these three mods, but the affect will be minor:
- Noisium
- Faster Random
- C2ME (DH 2.3.0+)
The easiest fix is to move slower and/or ignore it. This hole is most visible while moving over not generated (by vanilla) terrain. Moving over that terrain every subsequent time may not create the hole. And moving slower will give MC more time to load the chunks as you go.
If none of that helped, you can also tune the overdraw prevention, look at the third section to know how.
Q: There are low quality full blocks behind and around non-full block, e.g. fences or ladders
A: This is intended behavior, to prevent holes in the world while you move, DH will overlap with some part of the vanilla terrain.
How much of the terrain is covered is determined by the overdraw prevention:
1.0 will mean DH LODs start where vanilla chunks end.
0.1 will mean that DH render very close to the players position.
0.0 sets it on auto mode.
To fix this, you can either:
Increase your vanilla RD, which will move the DH LODs further from you.
Tune the Overdraw Prevention setting, see the next section to know how.
Q: Where do I edit the overdraw prevention setting?
A: Overdraw prevention setting can be edited inside the DH config under:
Advanced > Graphics > Culling
BUT: if you use shaders, they will influence overdraw prevention. The effectiveness of overdraw prevention depends on the shader’s internal settings, which may or may not be adjustable. However, the shader’s overdraw prevention will always operate within the limits set by DH’s overdraw prevention. To avoid conflicts, ensure that DH’s overdraw prevention is not set too high.
but the point is that im not even moving much and its doing it very very close to me, i'm not going at mach 20 with elytra and i'm just walking or using creative fight. it is it really supposed to be like this? this doesn't really tell me much and overdraw doesnt seem to change anything

like this is not normal

at all
i dont even have shaders or texture packs enabled yet either
also C2ME doesnt even seem to have a 1.21.1 version at all and faster random isn't on forge/neoforge
c2me does have 1.21.1 neoforge https://modrinth.com/mod/c2me-neoforge
Modrinth
Concurrent Chunk Management Engine (NeoForge) - Minecraft Mod
A mod designed to improve the chunk performance of Minecraft.
oh, its on modrinth. i'll try it but i think i saw one of the descriptions of one of the mods above say that it hinders performance with distant horizons too
With DH <2.2 it did, but somewhere along the line the slowdown was fixed, and now C2ME speeds DH up
What other mods do you have, there are some mods that make overdraw much worse
Also if 0.01 or 0.1 is not close enough (0.0 is automatic so it is larger then 0.1) you can disable the fading effect, the end of the fading is further away then the end of ovedraw with no fading
can i send a mod list somehow?
also, i know that some shaders arent supported with distant horizons (but i dont know what that means exactly. like does it straight up not work? buggy?), but i want to try to use vibrant shaders with distant horizons and i saw that the render distance gets butchered and theres a thick layer of fog. you wouldn't have any idea how to make it render normally without the fog? i assume its because of the vanilla render distance being at 10 chunks which is fine for distant horizons and vanilla but not for shaders i guess

the shader dev has to make it compatible
can send logs i guess
maybe it gives some clues on slow chunk loading
If a shader is not comatible and you are using Iris the DH LODs just won't show up at all
wrong logs I think, they are very weird
/logs
You should send your
latest.log
file to provide additional useful information.
Logs are usually located in the .minecraft/logs
directory.
On Windows: %appdata%\.minecraft\logs
On Linux: ~/.minecraft/logs
On Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/logs
Please upload the file to mclo.gs instead of sending the raw file. This makes reading the contents of the file a lot easier and improves the chances of you getting the help needed.
After uploading the file, click on Save
and send the link.me when launcher logs
oh my bad
also trying to use distant horizons in a server im hosting using Universalator and i might be wrong buit i feel like the render distance feels smaller than it did in a world by myself. im not really sure how to increase it lol

I don't see any overdraw problematic mods on the list in the logs
Disabling fading is your best bet if you wan to get the overdraw even closer
yeah i feel like the distance is significantly lower
do i need chunky?
i just found this too https://www.reddit.com/r/DistantHorizons/comments/1iya7z5/how_to_get_distant_horizon_to_work_on_server_with/

it has a google drive link to some plugin i cant find anywhere else
okay in singleplayer things load significantly further but i havent moved from spawn AT ALL either and it has that ugly fading effect regardless

just wish i knew how to make it work right

this weird lod effect on this tree where it shows a massive yellow pillar despite that not existing

it stays unreasonably close

Increase the vertical quality setting
is there nowhere i could find like. generally recommended settings that i might also want to change that could help?
Vertical quality, drop off distance (horizontal quality), cave culling
Only these can create pillars
If you max out first 2 and disable the third it should be gone
But your fps should be gone too
If you're on a server, the server decides your render distance
For example on the DH SMP its 10 chunks, so even if you set your render distance to 32, you'll only be able to see 10 chunks
You'd have to edit the server.properties file to increase it
what would be an ideal render distance for servers?
and is this related to the fading effect then? or
i hate it here

There is no ideal render distance
Do you want higher render distance and your server can handle it? Increase it
Is your server not able to handle the currect render distance? Decrease it
okay. and preloading chunks on a server, is that like recommended? would that help me not have as many holes and visual stuff going on? i'm not really sure how to do that
This looks like low quality LODs trying to fade to vanilla chunks
Always preload
Unless you dont have the storage for it, there is no reason not to and will significantly improve performance
Is that on a server or singleplayer?
singleplayer
i'm not sure how much storage distant horizons chunks take up or how to preload on servers ( or in general )
or if i were to switch/reset the world what would happen to the chunks that were downloaded
I saw something about C2me, idk if you're using it rn so I might be repeating stuff, but on forge you can install the fabric version if you also have syntra connector (Its a mod that makes Fabric mods work on Forge, not perfect but C2ME does work fine)
i do have it right now and i have a neoforge version
Iirc they would still be stored but not shown if you have DH installed
Do you have any mods from someaddon? Like better chunkloading?
i did try sinytra connector for a mod but it straight up seemed to just crash minecraft i think
Ive seen that mod break stuff before, mc wouldnt be able to load more chunks for some reason
cupboard library by someaddon
i think thats it..? i cant filter by mod owner
someone recommended i try farsight instead of distant horzions too
lmao its loading a chunk from across the map

also just noticed this. not sure if it has to do with shaders but this one is supposed to be compatible so. and this is up close to me where i just spawned

more weird fake blocks and textures. i was jumping up and down when i noticed it and it looks so noisy and the pixels keep moving and stuff
oh yeah thats everywhere. holy crap. it might be shader related idk but i swear that wasnt there a moment ago. im currently trying to downgrade iris/sodium and switching between those and embeddium/neoculus and stuff because my shader pack menu is completely invisible ingame and i want to try to use distant horizons with shaders while trying to fix the ugly effects im getting

turning off distant horizons ingame did fix this issue though and this weird effect is gone
it keeps trying to create lods up close to me and getting every single one wrong
