How hot/humid does it get there? Where I live (peak 32 °C, humid) those pants would be too heavy for me
Do you have access to linen pants? There are also linen blends if you do not like the wrinkles
Max during Summer can get up to 37°c or more here (with high humidity)
Linen is probably the safer choice, but I don’t like the maintenance it needs
Unless there’s some items where the wrinkles add to the aesthetic?
Linen is supposed to be wrinkled, but like nissan said u can search for linen / cotton blends to reduce that effect.
Weight alone isnt a great metric to sus out how breathable or hot weather friendly a garment is.
A budget will be useful for anyone interested in giving you recommendations.
temperature ratings on clothing are subjective (even for stuff like down jackets); one person may feel great at 37 C and one person may feel like death at 37 C
what do the people around you wear in summer?
Even better, what do you wear in the summer
Budget is $300 AUD as absolute maximum, but I want to stay under 250
Problem is that most people are not as effected from the heat as me. If I stand outside in 30+°c heat I will start sweating within a few minutes
Most people wear shorts or jeans, but I don’t always feel comfortable wearing shorts
I often wear Uniqlo linen blend trousers. They get the job done but I don’t like how they look when they’re super wrinkled
Otherwise, shorts are my next option outside of work situations of course, but only as a last resort
that's really fucking hot, most people are sweating in that range lol
Yep, and I often get weird looks when I comment
People love it for some reason
But complain when there’s a slightly cool breeze
tropical wool and seersucker (any material) are other materials you could look at
That could work
I’ll take note of that
I do remember seeing some great Japanese seersucker jeans a while ago
A steamer makes looking after linen much easier IME.
I have one and it takes 10 minutes or more to do it. When it’s hot that is not enjoyable standing next to steam for that long
this is why I wear linen or embrace wrinkles in summer, i am willing to accept the wrinkles if it means i don't have to deal with steam in 90f/90% humidity
that's the issue with living in hot climates, you've gotta pick a struggle sometimes
That’s true
Maybe I just need the right piece where wrinkles are part of the design. The uniqlo pants are good but just look cheap or poorly made when they’re wrinkled
+1 for seersucker then as a material you should check out
obv it can still wrinkle, but it'll hold shape / smoothness better than linen.
In my experience ironing doesn’t take as long as steaming and can take care of tough wrinkles, though it does take a bit longer to set up
That being said like everyone else is saying, wrinkles a feature of linen and can look nice if you lean into them
Alternatively you can check out hemp and hemp blends. It’ll still wrinkle, just not as much as linen
Can anyone recommend any specific items under 300 AUD to look at?
to answer your initial question, material weight is one factor impacting how hot you'll feel in a particular pair of pants, but there are others:
- the type of material, as others have said
- the weave of the pant; fabrics with looser weaves let in more air and thus feel cooler
- the amount of space between the fabric and your skin; the more space/looser the pant, the more airflow you get while walking
- any additional treatment applied to the pants, such as DWR to repel rain; this usually causes less air to flow through the fibers
you can broadly think of material weight as 'heavier' = 'warmer' when comparing two items with the same fabric. the ones you linked in OP have a fabric weight of 300gsm, whereas these have a fabric weight of 250gsm which theoretically makes them feel less warm https://www.blacksmith-store.com/products/ripstop-part-timer-pant-washed-black?

i cannot speak to the actual products themselves, nor do i have a ranking for these pants, but the brands are all generally considered to be good buys and so my advice is "pick your favorite".
if you want other options, search ssense or farfetch or endclothing or google shopping for 'seersucker pants', 'tropical pants' or 'performance non wrinkle chinos'
@zeometer (xxxvi) thank you so much 🙏. I’ll look through all the options you listed and report back
if you're getting one of those, cool, but if not you may have better luck searching on your own, since you have a better understanding of your own needs. good luck! 🙂
I do like the stuff from Universal Works. A tad outside my usual price range (50-200 AUD), but they definitely seem like higher quality pieces
Like these look super comfy https://universalworks.co.uk/products/universal-works-military-chino-in-washed-indigo-8oz-organic-denim
They also have pants with twill
uw makes good stuff. it's a bit expensive but you can find great deals on them secondhand
Do they have sales often?
Is twill a good material for humid weather?
Twill varies from super heavy denim to super light weight shirting and can be made in materials from cotton to linen to synthetics. It's not as simple as twill universally being good for humid weather.

uw has seasonal sales, and you may want to check their stockists (end clothing, glasswing, ssense, etc) for any past season stuff
or like raisin said, buy secondhand
Black Ficus on Etsy I find the linen drapes in a way that's less sloppy but still embraces freedom and imperfection
Saw this store recommended on Instagram and like some of their products https://universal-surplus.com/products/swedish-green-work-shirt-info-size-guide-inventaire?utm_content=DPA-all-products-22%2F01%2F2024&utm_source=facebook&variant=48640818446664&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Adv%2B+campaign+US+%7C+DPA+-+02%2F2024&utm_id=120207146697340204&utm_term=120207146697360204&fbclid=PAQ0xDSwKol6xleHRuA2FlbQEwAGFkaWQBqyKHfaTtrAGnxkmGQMqYGd5HYTsxwvy_I__OU0bewE7kqYG1_U6cIVx5M6_MVkhl_B4aAqg_aem_KmzDqBRPDLadkeThferVvA&campaign_id=120207146697340204&ad_id=120207146697350204
