Arguments against Homelabs

Ok so my Plan was originally to build a separate Pc and use it as a homelab and host MC server for me and friends on it, but I have heard many people saying that it’d be a bad idea and that you need X and Y and Z if you want to host servers, but I just like the thought of having a physical machine right there in my home that I can do shit with and test stuff on + I don’t like subscriptions like server hosts cuz for me it just doesn’t feel the same. But maybe (most probably) y’all are right and it is stupid. Anyway, I want to kind of collect the pros or cons of having your homelab in your home network so I can maybe decide again. Any help greatly appreciated!
Solution:
Home hosting has its drawbacks / caveats
- Is your internet connection fast enough? In both directions (around 50M is usually enough; you should check here)? You don't connect the server to your router via WiFi, do you? - Does your ISP provide a somewhat static, public, IPv4 address? - Are you aware and able to deal with the security impliations? - Is your computer powerful enough to run both a client and a server? - Does any inhabitant (human or not!) mind the noise, heat and energy cost of a machine running 24/7? - Alternatively, is your playerbase OK with the server not being there when you aren't?

What exactly does „run both a client and server“ mean? That’d be when I am hosting on my personal PC only right? Cuz then I’d be playing and hosting on the same machine

Yes Again, honestly, if you know what you're doing any don't plan to host an insane number of players (& can foot the power bill or are already doing it) than just do it. I'd use TCPShield/NeoProtect to protect your origin IP and you should be good to go There's also https://playit.gg If anything, protect your origin IP

Yeah I am planning on using TCPShield

Then if you think you can do it, than do it

Unless you're planning on a large public SMP self-hosting is a great way to save cost But you may pay more in power than just using a server host Depending on your location

Yeah no like 5 concurrent players max

I don't expect much of an issue then

Idk how much of a power bill to expect, rn I host for like 10€/month

Keep in mind Geyser (Bedrock Cross-Server support) w/ TCPShield requires their business plan ($100 / month) If that's not an issue then you should be good :kek: no harm in trying

I don’t plan on doing Geyser

for anyone else who sees this thread, i pose this question: - do you know what you're doing? -> if no, don't self host - can you foot the power bill? -> if no, don't self host - do you need bedrock support? -> if yes, either pay for ddos prot or don't self host - do you expect high player counts? -> if yes, don't self host - protect your server ip, use tcpshield, neoprotect, or similar -> just do it. if you can do all of these, then there's no harm in trying.

idk, my power meter just doesn't increase for some reason if you already keep your pc on 24/7, then you likely wouldn't notice an increase in your power bill

Nah I host a 10€/month server with Nitrado but I don’t really like it
