Light vs Dark Tanks?

I imagine most are going to disagree, especially in warmer weather, but at least with these options (Uniqlo and Banana Republic), I think the darker tanks work somewhat better. I don't normally wear tanks at all, so my opinion is biased, but I feel like white gives off cheap underwear vibes here and is also less flattering in the midsection. If the fabric were thicker, that might address both concerns though. Are there any heavier options I might be able to try on locally before I give up on white tanks altogether?

i think some texture will help make tanks, esp white ones, not read as undergarment adjascent. specifically, im thinking of ribbed tanks (like the green one) wait i put on my glasses. are the white ones literally ribbed too 🫠 ignore me

they're all ribbed, but isn't that typically going to be the classic underwear texture anyway? I would imagine non-ribbed look less like underwear if they aren't too thin

The visual interest of ribbed helps a lot vs looking like an undershirt poking through. I agree that a heavier fabric helps a lot though. I have 2 pairs of white tanks: some very thin hanes and these heavy bronson ones. The bronson tanks look a lot better with an open shirt or jacket.

I like dark tanks too tbh, my most worn tank top is dark purple

Oh the bronson also being more relaxed helps a lot too. I think slimmer tanks work best as undershirts. It's not very flattering if they follow your body too tightly.

Thicker ribs could be the move here /wider

I mean ribbed tanks are undershirts. imo if ur gonna have ur shirt open it needs to be a knit tank instead. all of these fits would look better w the shirt buttoned.

I was imagining thicker/wider ribs, yeah. More courdroy like if that makes sense

these are what i mean by knit. ribbed tanks are going to be tight fitting because thats the purpose of the ribbing. you can find looser ribbed tanks if you're attached to the vertical lines, but they're usually more expensive than a pack of hanes.

agree, but trying to get some tanks in general here I like the first one you posted, but wonder if it might be too chunky under something like a linen camp collar

any brands in particular to look for, especially that I might be able to try in person?

it might be too chunky with these shirts yeah. idk how else to say but it just needs to feel more intentional. abercrombie & fitch will likely have smth in person to try.

I was just there actually and unless I missed them, the only tanks in store were the classic ribbed look or the athletic/cutoff style ones with crew necks

Yeah in person recs is where my usefulness ends. Stussy, ALD, dries van noten, some adidas collabs, scott fraser collection, left field denim, a handful of designers all do knit tanks.
