Shirt without tie

I am wearing a light coloured wool/linen/silk blend suit to a summer/beach wedding and am debating whether or not to wear a tie.

One thing I can never figure out is, how is it that sometimes you see a guy wearing a suit without a tie, and it looks exactly like that, it looks like it's missing something. Whereas sometimes it looks great. From what I can figure out, other than tieless business suits always looking bad, the trick is to wear a collar with a narrow spread, one that keeps it's shape without a tie (so e.g. with collar stays, maybe button down?) and to always wear two buttons undone. Is that it ?

Attached examples of where it works , where it looks good
