My friend who lives 200~ miles away has 90 ping on my server and 40 ping on hypixel (600+miles)
I've been looking in to ways to resolve this, as it seems his connection is taking a wildly inefficient route
Tracing route to <my-ip> over a maximum of 30 hops

I asked chat gpt for help and it recommended i use a reverse proxy / vps and reroute traffic, im self hosting on residential 1 gigabit fiber internet and dont want to pay if possible, can someone help me understand what I need to do here to fix this, and possible services I can use? I have 3 ports open for minecraft (25565, 19132(geyser) and 24454(vc), and a couple ports open for terraria/ark servers)

there was a image to describe this
but try getting a oracle free tier server and running a proxy on it that connects to the server
Dont
this is why you dont self host
residential ISPs are very unoptimized
could i reroute all my ports for all my game servers with the oracle vps? sorry if im not saying it correctly im pretty new to networking
Yes but where are you located?
Amarillo TX
slight north of dallas
i spent 250$ on a mini pc with a 8-core 5800u and 64gb of ram when id spend 20+ a month for a server with a 5950x and 8gb of ram
Im pretty happy and regret free with making my investment back in a year : )
and i can also run 4-8 various game servers at a time B)
Yes but your not factoring in the electricity and the need of a enterprise internet link
theres a reason no decently sized server self hosts
Whos your ISP? send their AS
Optimum
Also if that thing is running game servers 24/7 im not sure if theres a big chance it will reach a year, assuming for that price that its used
as?
35w max
less than a monthly payment of a vps per year
AS54004 Optimum WiFi - bgp.tools
AS54004 (Optimum WiFi)'s is an 13 year old BGP network that is peering with 341 other networks and has 3 upstream carriers
was open box
is it this?
should probably open the case too LOL

ive checked temps and they stay cool under light loads i dont plan on overloading him too much

bgp.tools allows you to do bgp debugging and gives insight into internet routing with ease in a user friendly way

using Optimum (AS19108)
amarillo tx
you said
Yup
i can send my ip if needed
starts with a 50
Ah that be better lol
if you want just send the subnet
like when u click on ur ip it sends the subnet so its all the announced ranges not ur exact ip
Meh just dont ddos me B)
Alright so this is your connection

You got Arelion Cogent and Lumen which isnt too bad
in this case your friend probably has the shitty ISP
Not sure if it matters but
he has about 40~ ping on hypixel
(ashburn va)
and he lives in kansas
and has about 90 ping on my server
Yeah it can all be routes
when i am 1/2 or 1/3 of the distane
you have arelion cogent and lumen, his ISP may have only GTT or so
Ah
Which makes it do a big trip to reach you
thats not how internet always works
lets say you have a cable to your neighboors house and then another to the house across the street, you can reach both in only 1 step but your neighboor would need 2 steps to reach the one across the street
now multiply this by thousands and thats pretty much how the internet works
Ah
Thank you so much
Also hypixel uses cloudflare Spectrum/magic transit
so nothing i can do to alleviate his issues?
Cloudflare is the most connected network in the world so its pretty much 4 hops away from everyone
You can
most recommended would be getting a carrier grade uplink
but thats expensive so
Ah
Well
Thats alright
Thank you again
I guess renting does have its uses
Hmm i wonder if theres a way I can use a SP for just their connection
and get my machine over there
so i dont have to worry about spending 20$+ a month for 2 cores and 8gb
If you want a cost effective solution id recommend finding a VPS reseller that uses Datapacket on Dallas and using it as a Tunnel/Proxy, Your ISP has direct peering (6 hops) to datapacket and they are very well connected so should have low latency across the US

You can, its called colocation
i really doubt they will accept a mini pc though
its usually sold per U servers
And its not cheap
1U on like a entry level cheap provider its like $50-60/m
Holy moly
yikes
self hosting it is
A lot
Okay another question if you dont mind
security, latency, technology, etc issues
Sorry this will be the last
not to mention your ISP could possibly sue you
or at least ban you
What
sue for..?
most residential ISPs are not happy with people hosting servers on their network
its usually in the contract
thats bullshit
Breach of contract
i really doubt they will sue but they can at least terminate you
Damn that sucks
Is there any ISPs that provide residential and have what I'd need to get a good connection around the nation/world
Im currently a college student and have the mini pc hooked up at home
but i plan to build a home server once i get my own house and shit
Depending on how scummy the ISP is (they can be very scummy) they may claim that you running a server caused significant increased costs on their network or whatever
its very rare
just avoid having a technician visit you, dont get DDoSd or recieve many players and should be fine
Yeah my ass im using less bandwidth than a 480p youtube video
Do you think under 30-40 at most on all servers is fine?
and dont foward too many ports they may log that
Which?
^^
Residential and good connection dont go along lol
Only really on Europe
American ISPs are kinda shitty to self host
You could try a business line
Damn, would using enterprise be worth it
1g on verizon business i think its like $175/m
I mean
latency wise yeah
Oh fuck
cost wise
not for a 1U
I guess highspeed residential it is
I got a sick 4u 9950x build planned
Thats business, basically like residential except you have less throttle, more customization and more freedom, nothing close to a dedicated/carrier line
gonna ge a 16u home rack 15" deep and load it with goodies
Reason?
Home server stuff
LLMs
game servers
jellyfin
Uhh GPUs for ai image gen
thats gonna be like $2k no?
NAS in the future as wekk
Yeeeeah
its a future project def but
I want to self host a large media server and game servers for friends and familys
have mc modpacks, terraria, ark servers etc
Hold on
i mean
This is just the 4u

thats like almost 2 years worth of renting a 9950x
if it interests you at all
All 16 cores?
Yeah
Damn
ivse seen Ryzen 9 dedicated servers for as low as $130/m
add the $70 for internet
also
do you have QoS router?
QoS?
Quality of service
The real cost is gonna be the NAS though I plan on having a 12 bay with 24tb hdds once i build up enough cash to make that kind of purchase
Not sure, I just have a standard gateway modem
basically prevents your home computer from lagging the hell out of the servers whenever you download something
Ah
Yeah I have no clue, but if I had to guess probably not
But thank you a ton for helping me out, it means a lot
Sad to see theres no free easy answer, but atleast its not too big of an issue to obsess over
Yeah theres a reason so many hosts exist and are profitable
As i recommended, use a vps as a proxy if you care about the ping
