50,000 chunks being loaded
so our server migrated to a new dedicated machine recently, where these issues started happening intermittently throughout the day. when they happen, OOM kills it and causes the server to crash even if we have OOM killer disabled via pelican. RAM is not the issue because we have <70% of allocated RAM being used during peak hours.
the logs just trail off with no signs of any errors or warnings, there are no crash reports to be found. anyone have a clue what this could be?

Solution
one week on and we haven't had any crashes since. seems like this has been fixed, thanks @Swift for pointing out that I misconfigured the RAM. the 50,000 chunks seems to be irrelevant though
