Help Resolving Dark, Blood Red Tint Over All HDMI Capture
👋🏻 Hello,
I have an HDMI gremlin that I cannot get rid of. I desperately need help. I am having a major issue with my HDMI capture. I am getting a dark red color over any console that I plug in the AVerMedia GC5532G2 Live Gamer Ultra 2.1 when plugged into my M1 iMac (16GB RAM, USB 4 port).
I have tested multiple HDMI 2.1 cables, multiple USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 cables, and multiple capture cards (I had access to an Elgato 4K X). I have done testing on my M1 iMac, a M2 Ultra Mac Studio, a 2017 Intel MacBook Pro, and a 2017~ish Windows Dell laptop.
All produced the red tinge. I cannot get this red tint to go away. When using an Elgato HD 60 X capture card, the issue is gone, but then I cannot have/use/play with 4K120 or 1440p120 pass-thru. Also, the Switch 2 does not appear at all with the HD60 X if HDR is enabled, it seems. Feels like a separate, but related issue. Does anyone know of a solution or have an idea?
I have written a fully detailed blog post documenting my entire problem and troubleshooting journey if you'd like all the details. Here is a video of the issue. I have seriously racked my brain on this one. I really need help please.

Nintendo Switch 2 Compatibility – Beta Firmware and Software Now Available
If its truly an edid problem maybe its the capture card. Might be time update firmware now that this is out
And try a different display if you can because your tv could be culprit. But if the capture in obs is showing the red tint it goes back to capture card
Would an EDID problem "infect" everything though? It started with the Switch 2, but now my PS5 and RetroTINK-4K produce the same effect. I do agree that it goes back to the card. I only see it in the capture. I tried my LG C1 and an LG monitor.
So the tint is only capture software not your c1 or lg monitor
Anyways since you have a switch 2. Update the firmware and try your chain again
I actually did find this firmware/software beta last night and still had the problem with all three of its EDID options. 😔
Might as well get in contact with avermedia at this point or find a different capture card to use. The elgato 4k x i think
🫡 I have reached out to AVer. And I tried this first with a 4K X. 🙃 Both cards have the issue. I sold the 4K X to get the AVer. 🫠
I think you can tell how crazy this has driven me. I appreciate the help/advice.
GG @Max Roberts, you just advanced to level 1 !
huh. idk what else to say. kinda stumped lol.
It appears that my "blood moon" red tint issue has disappeared. AVerMedia support suggested rolling back the capture card's firmware to version 1.0.7.7 or 1.0.7.10 to see if the issue went away. After rolling back to both versions and updating back to the current version of 1.0.8.1, the gremlin haunting my capture has been evicted. You can read more and see screenshots here.
While I am relieved that the issue appears to be gone, I still have lingering doubt. We still do not know what caused the issue to begin with. I can't be sure it won't pop up again. Some factors have changed since it all started: The Switch 2 received a nondescript firmware update; I integrated the dbrand Killswitch 2 case and dock adapter; I found a more optimal cable flow in my capture setup.
My theory is that there was a major whiff of an EDID handshake that jacked up the USB-C video signal in the capture cards caused by the Nintendo Switch 2. This issue only appeared once it entered the setup, and for a time, disappeared when the dock was disconnected from The Apparatus™. I can't know though and that is going to have to be enough for me.
