see look at it this way if the electrons are closer to nucleus (atom is small) it will more diffcutlt to remove electron (nucleus will strognly attract the electron in the shell)

oh damn ok sorry but yes since diffifulty to remove electron inreased (Zeff incresed) the IE increased as well cuz now you have to use more energy to take out the electron (Zeff is stronk)

since Mg2+ is smaller and carries more positive charge *(greater Zeff) * the energy required to form Mg2+ is greater than Mg+ does that make sense??? @Jeepaglu

well put them both together and boom if the ion is smaller and has greater positive charge then the IE to get to Mg2+ is greater than the IE to get Mg+ nope its applicable to Mg as well
