Hi @bb_nin! The best way to get a good answer is to ask a great question. Please consider including: - Reference pictures of things you like or are looking for. The more the better! - Pictures of you wearing things if you have fit questions. - A specific budget in numbers. “Affordable" means different things to different people. - Specific measurements: Chest and waist are far more useful than height and weight. - Measurements of your favourite fitting clothing. Learning these measurements will go a long way in helping you shop online and secondhand! - Whether you're happy to buy secondhand. - Whether you prefer to buy in person or are open to shopping online. - Your vague location, especially if that limits your options because of customs or access to stores. A country or continent is helpful. - Timescales: Do you need something urgently, or can you wait for the right thing at the right price? Also, please use the search function to see if a similar question has already been asked!

I am in the Pacific Northwest, I typically like fitted clothing, but not tight. I am 6'5 about 260 right now, down from 330. Hoping to get down to about 225. I Started in 2x at 330 for shirts, and now im in 1x and happy to buy new or used Affordable to me is about $100 an outfit ish I prefer shopping in person, but online can work Timescale is fluid, soonish next month or so just want to start building out my wardrobe a bit a little at a time I will get measurements as well I will do that, thank you very much do you measure man boobs? hahahaha

At your budget, the answer is likely to be have some outfits in mind you've lifted from other people and go shop for them in person at the nearest place that has lots of options you can try on which might include Uniqlo, a&f, jcrew etc. You're lucky in that we're right on summer sale season so your money will go a bit further but $100 for an outfit is petty tight - once you've got an idea what fits that will open up online shopping and second hand shopping where your money will stretch further. A cloth tape measure for a couple bucks is invaluable for measuring yourself and items of clothing that fit you to compare to others.

I just randombly though that number out there, I ont have a sense of how much an outfit costs admittedly is 200 too much? 150? I am not going to replace my entire wardrobe overnight, so maybe price is not an issue

chopper2mo ago
$100 is workable, but say you want pants, a shirt and some other layer (t-shirt, jacket etc) or maybe some shoes the budget can get eaten pretty quick. But budget is really personal, don't sweat it too much - some of the best dressed people here are working with tight budgets or buy exclusively at the thrift store or whatever. When you're starting it's good to restrict your spending and go slow cos we all make purchasing errors.

Shrimp
Shrimp2mo ago

the main problem im having, is I dont know how to find a general style i can find an outfit or two I like, but how does that help inform other things to build out a wardrobe
Shrimp
Shrimp2mo ago
that takes time dont expect to find it in a week or a month but having a good eye for things that others are doing is a good place to start look though that list of people that carrion put above and see if you can find styles in there that you like

im just remembering the impulse of "oh raw denim is kind of cool" then buying like 10 pairs of basically the same jeans in slightly different weights and fabrics or boots guys, etc.
bb_nin
bb_ninOP2mo ago
I really want a leather jacket for some reason I think its because I just turned 40 hahahaha
.
.2mo ago
if you are into that awesome but if you think you will have patience for the long run, let your tastes marinate
bb_nin
bb_ninOP2mo ago
not into that. I have a ton of jeans that I like and fit well, so thats not needed for me but you did make me laugh because I could see myself doing that!

I cant tell if I like them because they are models and famous people Or if regular people wearing those clothes would look silly haha
.
.2mo ago
i dont think the celebrity aspect reads much for me, tbh can you find a common denominator?
bb_nin
bb_ninOP2mo ago
jackets and things over shirts roughly speaking vest, jacket, sweater I love the suit coat look the mike meyers one there I love that look for some reason
.
.2mo ago
ive got vague memories of a former discord person saying "be more specific" which is great advice
bb_nin
bb_ninOP2mo ago

.
.2mo ago
yes
bb_nin
bb_ninOP2mo ago

bb_nin
bb_ninOP2mo ago

you should work on that, I think it will help!
carrion
carrion2mo ago
yeah WARP has a ton of shit youd probably enjoy tbh
Shrimp
Shrimp2mo ago
now you go look at clothes and see what you like that fits that aesthetic and fits you take the measurements of some garments that fit you well and use those to build some outfits highly recommend scouring for that stuff second hand. there is lots! All of that generally looks good. I think the pants are generally slimmer than I would recommend. Slim fitting pants, especially with tapers look really 2010 coded in a not so good way Levis 501 jeans are a good middle ground and a classic
bb_nin
bb_ninOP2mo ago
Yeah! I love Lucky jeans those are my go to
Shrimp
Shrimp2mo ago
anything that is going to be a wider straight cut is gonna be your best friend
bb_nin
bb_ninOP2mo ago
because I am bigger, or because thats the current style? I am going to keep dropping weight, so just trying to get a couple things along the way as a treat
douubleyouu
douubleyouu2mo ago
current style, but theres also great arguments that wider cuts are generally more versatile
Shrimp
Shrimp2mo ago
they just tend to look better on average and they def look better on bigger guys
bb_nin
bb_ninOP2mo ago
I see the highschool girls with those wide pants and white shoes
Shrimp
Shrimp2mo ago
regardless of trends
bb_nin
bb_ninOP2mo ago
it looks awful haha
douubleyouu
douubleyouu2mo ago
agree to disagree im a wide pant truther
bb_nin
bb_ninOP2mo ago
all good
douubleyouu
douubleyouu2mo ago
but we’re not advocating for you to go that wide (unless you wanna), something like a 501 or a 505 good benchmarks
Shrimp
Shrimp2mo ago
lets keep the high school girls out of our discussion about your style
bb_nin
bb_ninOP2mo ago
hahaha
Shrimp
Shrimp2mo ago
they don't affect how you should dress
bb_nin
bb_ninOP2mo ago
it was what I thought of when you said wide leg I dont think I have ever worn wide leg before, I will check it out!
Shrimp
Shrimp2mo ago
I'm telling you to avoid tapers like this
No description
bb_nin
bb_ninOP2mo ago
oh yes that makes sense
Shrimp
Shrimp2mo ago
stick to fuller leg cuts like these
No description
bb_nin
bb_ninOP2mo ago
thats not going to be great on me yeah, those look great! ok, I just dont understand the terms I think thank you
douubleyouu
douubleyouu2mo ago
its a tough part about starting to be more intentional with how you dress
Soup
Soup2mo ago
Don't worry, most brands don't understand or agree on the terms either!
douubleyouu
douubleyouu2mo ago
looking at pics is good for getting a general direction, then you can start identifying patterns in garments or outfits that pop up throughout the saved inspo, then you can research those pieces for terms or if you’re really lost, come back here and ask for help with that specific piece
.
.2mo ago
i think it is a very universal experience to be resitant to new pant cuts
.
.2mo ago
at the time i thought these were outrageously loose LOL

im not recommending that second pic to you, but the first pic is a good place to be
douubleyouu
douubleyouu2mo ago
this is very true, my fav pair of pants at the moment sat in consignment for 5 months before i took them back - i thought they looked awful but in reality i just wasnt used to how wide they were or really know how to make it work
Shrimp
Shrimp2mo ago
but yeah in general straighter, fuller cuts in pants without tapers
bb_nin
bb_ninOP2mo ago
Sounds great I think I have a mental block about baggy clothes
Shrimp
Shrimp2mo ago
leg opening is a good measurement to look at
bb_nin
bb_ninOP2mo ago
It reminds me of my whole life and what im trying to get away from so I want something more fitting
Shrimp
Shrimp2mo ago
9" leg opening is probably the minimum you want to shoot for
bb_nin
bb_ninOP2mo ago
I have worn them my whole life
Shrimp
Shrimp2mo ago
but I would recommend 10.5"+ leg opening (flat lay so 21"+)
douubleyouu
douubleyouu2mo ago
hey at the end of the day its all about wearing what you want to wear
Shrimp
Shrimp2mo ago
but you came here for style advice so you're gonna get style advice
carrion
carrion2mo ago
Wrangler is ur go to for jeans if u want to bite warps style at all, the wrangler cowboy cut specifically. Avoid the ones that are stretch denim tho.
bb_nin
bb_ninOP2mo ago
Awesome thanks folks, I will see if I can find some of these peices at a thrift store nearby or order some online Thrift stores around here have been sucking lately too many people have been going there And they removed the dressing rooms lol
zeometer
zeometer2mo ago
i dress in shorts and t-shirt when thrifting so i can put stuff on overtop lol only other thing I'll add is to take things slow and be okay with not buying anything from a thrift store. it's better to wait for something great then buy a bunch of mid things you'll regret
bb_nin
bb_ninOP2mo ago
Great advice, thank you!
warpweftwatergate
A) thank you for the kind words B) I wear almost exclusively what would be generally considered “wider” cuts, and almost always bootcut or flared at least somewhat so they fit over my cowboy boots. Wrangler cowboy cut, Levi’s 517 (orange tab vintage, the new ones suck) on the low end of the cost spectrum. sugarcane, mister freedom, Indigofera etc on the higher end. Shirts are almost universally two pocket pearl snap westerns. Wrangler and vintage stuff on the low end. Wythe, Saint Laurent, Celine, studio D’Artisan, west major on the high end. Tank tops and tees are all milsurp
bb_nin
bb_ninOP2mo ago
You are welcome! And I need to say, your suits and suit coats are exquisite I would love to have stuff like that!
warpweftwatergate
Find a good tailor and then pay them well for the rest of your life All of my suiting is custom tailored to me Doesn’t matter if it’s vintage or high end, I take it to my dude and he chops it up for me
bb_nin
bb_ninOP2mo ago
What do you pay roughly for that?
warpweftwatergate
It depends on the work tbh
Spuck
Spuck2mo ago
If you do have access to a decent tailor, you can get cheap, great, second hand suit jackets and get them adjusted (as long as the shoulders fit right.) Probably the best value in second hand clothing going.
