What scenario is TPM unlock for Luks useful for?

I keep seeing people recommend it for use on Steam Deck since you can't enter the password without an external keyboard, but isn't a drive that automatically de-encrypts on boot functionally identical to a drive that isn't encrypted? It might thwart removing and imaging the disk, but couldn't someone with physical access to the device just copy and paste while the drive is unlocked?
