512 Tempest Mic - Too Loud
My friend has a 512 Tempest Microphone, and even though the gain knob is just slightly turned on (around 5-10% from off) and he's about 18 inches away form the mic, the audio is so loud that without a compressor he is clipping/close to clipping. It plugged directly into his computer, so there isn't an audio interface involved.
I tested the mic at my house, and did not have this issue. I had the gain knob around 35-40% and sat about 6 or less inches away. So I don't think it's a mic issue, but I'm not sure what we're overlooking. If anyone can provide some direction, it would be much appreciated.

RMB on Volume Setting in Taskbar -> Sounds -> Choose "Recording" tab -> Double-click LMB on the mic that is used -> Levels -> Check Gain. What level is it at?
His is set to 100%. Looks like all of my devices and his devices are set to 100% by default.
GG @Excabandai, you just advanced to level 1 !
And is there a setting under "Volume" which is set to 100?
This is the only setting. So it may only be a volume slider.

Then play with volume. I'd also suggest reinstalling drivers for sound card from MoBo manufacturer since Gain option is missing.
Right click that slider and change it to dB
It’s probably adding gain
Should be at 0dB or slightly below
Yep. That was it. +45 dB gain. Thank you!
