Question about Steam
Hi,
I don't really need any help just answers to questions, but I can't find any other place to post my questions, and I couldn't find any answers to all of my questions on the FAQ on the website or on Discord unless I'm missing something.
Is it possible to use Heroic Games Launcher to launch Steam games (this is my primary question), and also to launch non-GOG/non-Epic games, like any random standalone Windows games via Wine etc or any random Linux native games like SuperTuxKart? It seems like it's possible, but I wanted to double check 100%.
Basically, I'm looking for a launcher with playtime tracking that can launch all games on my PC, Steam, GOG, Ubisoft Connect, anything, either natively or via Wine, and it seems like Heroic Games Launcher might be exactly that?
If this is not the right place to ask, I apologize, I couldn't find anywhere else to ask this.
Thanks.

Okay so it looks like it does support Linux native games and games via Wine/Proton including playtime which is awesome and it works offline too which I always wanted from a games launcher, but I'm still not sure if it also supports launching Steam games?
Ah okay, good to know. Oh well, that's not really a huge loss since Steam supports it's own time tracking. This project seems incredible and exactly like what I was looking for 🙂 thanks for answering.
Do you know if there are any plans to support Steam games at any point? I'm guessing no but I figured I'd ask anyway

I'm not a Heroic dev, but i think that lack of support to Steam isn't a issue.
Heroic possibly wouldn't exist if Epic, GOG and Amazon had launchers running natively on Linux.

That makes sense, I just think it would be cool to have like a complete all-in-one games launcher that also supported Steam. It's not a huge problem, it still does what I'm looking for, I just think it would have been cool if it also supported Steam.

Lutris support Steam, but you just see the games installed by Steam. There is a few options in Lutris for Steam games.

That's a tad bit disappointing that they won't add it here then, because this could really truly be an all-in-one then, oh well, I still think this project is really cool.

to be clear, I think something like
show the games installed by steam in heroic
was discussed a long time ago and it was attempted, it's not that we wouldn't accept a feature like that, but somebody has to implement itnational-goldOP•2mo ago
Oh, that's a more promising sounding answer, thanks

yeah to be clear legendary, gogdl, and nile are all separate projects managed by (some) different folks than heroic itself (heroic devs do participate in those projects though)
The thing about steam, compared to the other stores is that its much more complex to support, and thus far there have been no successful open source projects to support it in the same ways that gogdl and legendary and nile support those stores.
Fortunately steam generally works on most supported platforms natively.
As for lutris, it supports steam by just running steam in the background, which, i think for most folks isnt ideal considering how heavy it can be on certain machines.

yeah that's the thing, to me it would be super cool and convenient to have all games, online and offline, wine/proton and linux native, steam and non-steam games all in one place, that would be awesome. honestly, i'd even be fine with lutris's approach of just running steam in the background or whatever, and if that makes it simpler to implement this functionality then all the better.
i'm glad that this project is at least open to the idea of steam support even if it's not a priority currently. i do have a feeling i'm not the only one who would welcome the idea of steam support.

i think there's also a philosophical difference between heroic and lutris.. heroic tends to use cli open source tools to download and install games from the various stores, and thus far no such tool for steam exists (seems to be rather non trivial to do)
