For the launcher, you should probably chose between Modrinth App, Prism Launcher and ATlauncher Modrinth is the most visually pleasing, though it has some limitation like not downloading mods from CurseForge from the app (you can downloads mods from Modrinth in the app as well as shader and resourcepacks) Prism is considered to have the most functionality and the GUI is not bad ATLauncher lets you also manage servers, but outside of server it should be more lacking than the top 2 I'm using Modrinth and there is a button to auto update mods and you can change the game version whenever you want, to both older and newer, I think you can even change the mod loader of an insteance, though I haven't used it even once, so no idea how automatic it really is and what happens if one of the mods you use has not updated yet No idea how and if such functionality is in Prism of AT, but in Prims I would be surprised if it was absent For the mods, I would say start with performance and core mods you want to build everything upon You can compose your wn performance pack or build upon an existing one As for the core mods I mean mods that might pose incompatibilities or change the gameplay significantly, as an example I would qualify here DH, Create or DivineRPG (I consider DH gameplay changing as it is completely different experience exporint with vanilla RD of even 32 and DH RD of over 256, worldgen mods choice is also greatly affected by DH presence) Note that every mod you add will need to update to the newest MC version, it can take a day, a week, a month, or there are mods that to this day are stuck in 1.20.1 or even 1.12.2. If you want to be up to date with Mojang updates you don't want many mods, and especially not many core ones, despite them being the most influential ones, as they are also the ones that take the most effort to update, though they also have bigger dev teams and there are exceptions like DH that update pretty quick Also as long as a mod does not add any custom blocks to the game, you should be able to just remove or abandon it later if it does not update For GUI mods I would use Appleskin I also think ambient mods are very good at improving immersion, try at least: - AmbientSounds - Presence Footsteps Other great one is Sound Physics Remastered, but it is quite heavy to run, though as DH you can fine tune the performance quite a bit. It also doesn't hurt to add [ESF] Entity Sound Features whichc allowes some entity sounds features with resourpacks if you ever download such resourcepack There are also mods: - Drip Sounds - Quality Sounds - Sounds (this one I don't like) I quite also like the Alternative Rain Sounds resourcepack If you don't use shaders, there are also some great visual enhancing mods like Simple Fog Control and Fog that improve the vanilla fog, with the first one allowing a seamless connection between vanilla and DH fog improving visuals a bit more Here it is important to mention there are some settings in DH that can improve the visuals without shaders, personally I like increasing the noise texture steps to 8 and intensity to 8 or higher, and setting fog to linear Other visual mods include: - Effective or Particular ✨ - Subtle Effects - Visuality - Dynamic Surroundings - Visual Workbench - Visual Overhaul - Visual Jukebox - Falling leaves (better than the one included in modern MC) - and many many more With Bliss shader (I think it is the only one that uses this mod) you can install Boe's Earth it will improve the snow and carpets on trees, and allow for some extra resourcepack features Each of these mods should be removable if they ever stop updating You need to also choose the MC version and mod loader For that this site is useful: https://modrinth-statistics.tobinio.dev/charts?versionGroup=minor You will find the most mods on 1.20.1 with 1.21.1 being next, next good choice might be 1.21.4, but after that there are some performance problems with vanilla MC and the mod count drops even more As for the mod loader, for a more vanilla friendly gameplay with less mods and less core mods, I think Fabric should be better, it updated faster than Forge in the past and it is the native loader of almost all the performance mods, especially on older MC versions, there should just be less problems on Fabric Here is a list that contains, among other, some quality of life mods: https://github.com/TheUsefulLists/UsefulMods And here is an immersive + ambient + QOF + fixes list I made some time ago (couple messages long with short descriptions of most mods): https://discord.com/channels/881614130614767666/1256089075996426260/1256551092725223467 Couple important mentions from this list are at least:
- [ETF] Entity Texture Features, [EMF] Entity Model Features, [ESF] Entity Sound Features, and Ears -> Adds transparency, configurable blinking, always lit pixels, ears, tails and more to player skins (google how to add, some can be done in EMF config in game, else on Ears website), and allowes for other entities to have custom models, animations and effects, install these to use them: - Fresh Animations resourcepack - Fresh Animations Extensions, I don't like most of the extensions, but Emissive Add-on and Objects Add-on are really cool! - Eating Animation (Mostly incompatible with food changes in resourcepacks) - Not Enough Animations -> Adds more player animations, like climbing the ladder (mostly visible in third person or on other players)
The first set (4 mods) if nothing else will allow you to see additional skin effects of other players, but those resourcepacks are great, give them a shot, and nothing is stopping you from applying the additional effects to your skin too for other players with those 4 mods, and third person view
