Laptop completely freezes and enters Kernel Panic during installation.
Hello.
I've been trying to install Bazzite on a 9 year old laptop with very bad specs, in an attempt to stop it from becoming e-waste, even though it already is.
But whenever I try to install the OS, I set up all the settings, give it access to the full "separate" SSD (a different one from my windows SSD) and clear up all the settings. Then when I try to click Begin Installation, it goes through the process but gets stuck at
Deployment starting: /run/install/repo/bazzite-stable
(during this period I'm still able to use the mouse and keyboard etc)
Then after about 20 minutes of this, it finally says Deployment finished, installing OS
or something like that, but this time, it freezes my entire computer. Not even my cursor moves on the screen, and in another half hour, it enters Kernel Panic mode and asks me to reboot.
I've tried 3 times so far and had the exact same issue. Can somebody please help me?
Thanks.28 Replies
This is chosen settings

This is when the computer still functions while installing

and this is the Kernel Panic

My laptop specs are
Intel Pentium N2400 @2.5GHz
Intel HD 505 graphics
8 GB DDR3 1600MHz RAM
256 GB SATA SSD
64 bit UEFI system
I have tried both a SanDisk Usb flashdrive and a SanDisk Ultra SD card as the bootable drive
ventoy or rufus
were you able to install other distros before
rufus
yes this laptop has been like my experiment computer for a long time, everything from Ubuntu to archlinux to android tv
worked great too
that's good. try again with ventoy
will do
quick question, do I install the windows.zip one or the livecd.iso one?
ventoy
I've never used it before, sorry if it's a dumb question
windows.zip
alright
no worries. extract the zip and open ventoy2disk within
if you use secure boot enable the secure boot option. you don't need it if you have it off on bios
it's off
after this copy and paste as much isos as you want on the partition that pops in your file explorer
the ISOs will be copied to the flash drive right?
yea
oh wow this is much simpler than rufus
rufus wasn't allowing me to use exFat formatting when I tried to burn the iso on the flash drive to I had to use FAT32 instead
@Denny same issue
another thing you can try is to disconnect the windows ssd until it's installed, but im not confident whether it does anything
kernel panic usually means you're out of ram but it can't be bc on my 4gb laptop it worked 🤔
I'm already doing that
it hasn't entered kernel panic yet, that takes like half an hour after it gets frozen
I'm considering just installing the kde fedora os and just add Bazzite on top like it says on the website
yea when it fails you could try fedora kinonite, also a immutable os
@Denny sorry for distributing you, what should I do here?

This is Fedora Atomic Kinonite 42
are you using auto install or manual format?
auto
it's a new ssd
minus the fact that I tried installed Bazzite on it like 3 times
that's odd.. this means the boot and/or EFI partitions are faulty but it shouldn't be a problem on auto
ehh well, I can probably just chroot into the SSD using a live usb and get grub installed that way
yea that's worth a try
sorry i can't be much of help. never had this when doing auto install
it's no problem, my laptop is stupidly slow anyways
all this was just because I wasn't able to install directx 9 on windows 11 to play the older games that I had
@Denny btw I think I found the issue. My laptop uses UEFI and ventoy chose MBR for me instead of GPT which I forgot to change
that's probably why it didn't install
hmmm, I should reinstall it, just so it doesn't cause issues down the line
