Are More Accurate LODs for Partial Blocks Planned in Distant Horizons?
Hello, while playing with Distant Horizons, I’ve been wondering - is there any option to enable higher-quality LOD models for things like fences, bamboo, lily pads, and other partial blocks?
Currently, all of them get reduced to a single full block in LODs, which can look jarring and break immersion, especially when using a low render distance
Is there any plan to improve this or add more accurate LODs, at least for closer levels? I think more detailed geometry for fences or bamboo would make a noticeable difference up close

What is your clientside lod quality setting? It defaults to 3 but I think it can go up to 5

what happens if you set it to max
However, even with those settings, the LOD shapes are still simplified to full blocks

I see. In that case, I guess they don't implement partial blocks yet
It'd be useful for the first tier of lods (ie the ones closest to you), although I would imagine there's no point doing it for tier 2 or lower
Of course, I’m mainly referring to the first LOD level - or maybe this could be added as an experimental feature that users can enable if needed
I think the main blocker for this is presumably the lod format itself doesn't support subblock data points
This would have to be for a hypothetical 4.x at the earliest, or else we break existing clients
A lame but effective workaround might be to increase your "real" render distance so subblocks turning into blocks won't visually matter as much
Version 4.x?? That’s hard to believe - is this feature really so complex that it would take that long to implement and polish?
It's not neccesarily that it's a complex feature, it's simply that breaking changes generally force a major version bump, and if there's not already support for partial block shapes in the data format, the data format has to be changed

Anyway, I have no idea whether the current data format could support this or not; if the format was created in an exceptionally future-proofed manner, it's possible this could be 3.x. My guess would be probably not however
Got it, thanks for the explanation
not planned no
