Secondary drive mounted prevents booting to gaming mode

I tried searching and haven't seen anything else mentioning this. I can format, mount and add a secondary drive in desktop mode, but after doing so I can no longer switch into gaming mode it crashes back to desktop mode. I can see Process 38012 (steamwebhelper) of user 1000 dumped core. in the logs around the time it's happening. Has anyone seen this before?

I take it back, it was a coincidence. The real issue seems to be having a KVM HDMI device attached and mirrored from a 4K tv in desktop mode. A full reboot gets me to gaming mode ok.
