How do people dress where you live? - Topic of the day 7/31/25
Well? How do people dress where you live (you may give as much detail as you see fit), and what impacts this? How closely do you dress in this way? Do you like how people dress where you live: why or why not?

I'm going to share an unsolicited little story tangentially related to how ppl dress where I live. i took a brief hiatus from this server a little while ago and that was all fine to not think about any of this, but then this one little observation kind of pushed my mindset to a more reasonable frame of mind.
one day I found myself at a local coffee shop which has extreme blue decor, the walls, floor, chairs, etc. all blue. And then I started to notice that just about everyone (who wasnt wearing sweats and On cloud shoes in particular, what is it with those), was also wearing blue. Blue shirts, blue jeans, blue shoes, blue striped sweaters, etc. etc. Not that this is bad, it was just overwhelmingly blue. Kind of oppressive actually
Then someone walked in with a pretty decent outfit which was entirely shades of yellow, and it had me thinking that maybe I can be somewhat thoughtful and intentional with my wardrobe on my own terms without necessarily worrying about big F Fashion. Because its fun.
so anyways, here I am wearing blue
Magellan and Columbia fishing gear, lightweight long sleeve dri fit material, Loose fitting airy fishing button ups with tactical/cargo pants and jeans. Louisiana really is the sportsman’s paradise, and being located next to Toledo Bend, we have some of the best fishing in north america.
Hey dudes, low top rubber boots, crocs and on clouds rule the shoe circuit. The most important thing to the general southern man is practicality, if it doesn’t have a use or isn’t extremely comfortable, it doesn’t get worn.
Love this description. Do you find this influences you or restricts you in any way?
It’s definitely got an effect on just how different i feel when i try to dress out! But I definitely don’t let it get in my way
Packers, brewers, and UW/ collegiate gear, work has a uniform so between Catholic institutions I’d say things are pretty good. A lot of Land’s End, which if it weren’t the provider for student uniforms I don’t think I would ever even think of.
I spend my summers in South Carolina and the differences between Charleston and Columbia are much wider than than what I see between Chicago / Madison / Milwaukee.
In one of his videos, Frugal Aesthetic mentions how the happiest you probably where was just buying clothes for Zara and H&M before you were deep into the world of Fashion. And while I don’t necessarily think people should buy a lot of fast fashion like Zara, I do think it’s true that fashion is most fun when you don’t feel conformity for big F Fashion.
Omg I love this
Here‘s it‘s still skinny jeans everywhere but I think it takes a long time for trends to shift in the general public who isn‘t super into clothes for the most part
Besides that we live in the alps so lots of people wear pieces of hiking clothes on a daily basis (especially shoes)
Most teenagers I see look like straight off the IG explore page, but it makes sense for them to do so
In NW NJ is still athleisure everywhere you look. In 5 years of being back here I’ve never seen a person wearing any brand that I recognize since this hobby started so I’m constantly reminded how niche it is. So it’s altheisure, sneakerheads, Kohls, and probably some vintage people.
In NE England it’s mostly nike tracksuits, fake gucci/YSL etc. - the typical ‘Chavvy’ look. In newcastle there’s more of a mix of styles with a lot of goths/alt fashion and streetwear, but the average person above say 25-30 tends to fall into the chavvier fashion category
I often feel out of place back home in the north east compared to when I’m at Uni, but at the end of the day I’m not too concerned and try to avoid being judgemental about what others wear in the same way I’d hope they would be about me
That’s a good attitude to have! I often feel like a circus attraction when I‘m back home in my rural village but at some point you get used to it
Yeah I understand the feeling lol. Both preppy looks and more western/70s things attract some funny looks in my hometown lol
There’s an instagram fashion based submissions page at my uni where people anonymously describe cool fits they’ve seen as there’s a lot of incredibly well dressed folks and my life goal is to make it onto there
San diego is almost entirely athleisure all the time. I get complimented often on my clothes on public even when im wearing very basic shit the bar is just incredibly low to dress well here
Flip flops, shorts and t-shirts
Sneakers, jeans and a white t-shirt
and uugh, soccer team jerseys
yeah I would say 80% of men here dress as above. Oversized fits are a bit in style for young adult gen z, I guess. You're still unlikely to find someone wearing pants that aren't jeans, though. Except for people who are going to work or taking a lunch break, ofc

I mean, I'm not complaining or anything, but sometimes I wish I lived somewhere colder so I could wear nice coats lol
and heavier fabrics
I hate wearing jeans because it gets so hot, thank god for linen pants. Wish I had found out about them sooner, lol
I'm also in the hot + humid club (today's high was 105F/40.5C, heat index 111F/43.9C).
What I see most often Aging Millennial Battling Heatstroke (slim fit, tech fabric shorts/chinos or jeans, short sleeves), Backyard BBQ Dad (cotton cargo shorts, weathered tee, nondescript athletic shoes or sandals), and Jeans Guy (straight or somewhat baggy jeans, cotton tee, sneakers). But it's Texas, so there's also a smattering of snug jeans and work boots (occasionally cowboy boots) with a tee, fishing shirt, or button-up/-down.
I don't see many guys wearing anything that's obviously linen or hemp, silk or rayon (etc), really any mesh/lace/open-knit, nor very loose or wide fits, despite how well all those work in this climate.
Of course, Texas, so mesh and silk and shorts that look like skirts and pants that swoosh when you walk are typically for ladies and gays, no matter how much better they feel on your body than slim-fit jeans and a slim fit polo.
As a visibly queer guy who wears women's clothes and almost never encounters other visibly queer men/masc-presenting folks: I am not a fan. Would absolutely love to see more dudes embracing all those good things in my area, please and thanks.
Hi, I live in a hot and humid place too!
But i think most people here dress for the weather (oversized, shorts etc.)
That being said, I do envy feminine styles as its more expressive than what guys would typically wear (t-shirt + jeans), while still being comfortable in this disgusting weather
Montirex, 110's, black north face jackets. Until they get to 40yo, with a few quid, then it's all black Hugo Boss. head to toe.
And never white socks.
The cool kids in Melbourne love a little HD Trackpant situation
Varies wildly by age and social tribe on my city, I don't really feel good with any sweeping generalizations about the general populace
It's a rural city but there's a good university here so you can see people from all walks of life
I did grow up in a rural town in Bumsfuck, Nowhere so it's still very metropolitan by my standards
Rio?
I did spend all my formative years in a little conservative rural town but my soul never belonged there, I'm a city boy at heart.
So, talking about white middle-class urbanite men aged 20-40 which are the demographic I can compare myself to the most, they dress generally bad. Not dogwater bad, there's generally at least an attempt, while in the rural town I came from men didn't even try to dress nice because under machismo caring about clothes is bad. But while there's an attempt, it's pretty much the stuff trending on #menswear done even worse. Slim/skinny pants, those aberration sneakers (usually black instead of brown) or just plain black/white sneakers, polo shirts.

This is the usual

This would be someone trying to get fancy (tucked in and not wearing jeans and sneakers!)

The rightmost look is the younger version of it
The slim black serge pants are a staple of the young cishets here

I'm a student of CS and I swear to god whenever it's not summer 50% of the class is on those damned pants
bingo
oh yeah, this look is pretty common here too
I live in a former mining town that by now has shifted mostly to being a university town. Generally though the overall culture favours a mode of relatively unpretentious dressing, with most ppl wearing "whatever is comfortable", but there are the usual subgroups with their own specific styles of dressing, like Gen Z students in Baggy jeans, left-leaning students who for some reason currently seem to favour adidas tracksuits, turkish granddads in slouchy decades old tailoring etc.
