Abstract Inspiration - Topic of the day 8/6/25
In many cases #inspiration for fits comes from seeing others' fits (take #waywt for example). In some cases though, we can gain a lot from finding or actively seeking less direct inspiration. What kinds of things other than clothes inspire you? How do they inspire you, and how can you turn that into an actual fit?

Nature 100%
its so textural and the colors are so varied and all make sense and feel cohesive
@nyalla
who posts all the flowers
@lys i believe
I have a big dog park that i go to every day and its mostly native prairie and partially wooded. I get a lot of good feelings from watching as it changes week to week
Also the sky
but yeah anything with texture, sunlight, sheerness, metallics
walls with chipping paint or brick or whatever
The colour spectrum I wear is heavily informed by where I'm from.

Moviesssss movies movies movies movies i love cinema
I’m a big fan of nature, yesterday I was inspired by this tree. The chipping bark, mottled colors, long lines etc

Though tbh I don’t know if that’s a healthy tree
I can‘t describe why, I just like the vibe

My love for color and texture is for sure sourced from my love of just art in general, followed a lot of artists several years ago back when twitter was less hell than it is now and it for sure meaningfully shaped what I want to express through fashion
i do this lots subconsciously. any time i see smth that speaks to me on any level I save it and keep it forever. i have multiple 3k+ image albums lmao

it doesnt usually translate into like a 1:1 fit ig, more just....idk vibes curation
this would fix me
So yeah, inspiration is everywhere, but it can also require some active effort and intent to really see it

i'm often drawn to architecture and product design - the shapes formed, color usage, mixes of materials, visual signifiers, etc. imo it's a way to "study" intentionality
hm
me when i get you

does king count as abstract inspiration asking for a friend
no king is a direct inspiration

more than visuals i'd say music is a major impact on how i'm dressing. i'm prone to closing myself off when i'm unhappy (which is ever so helpful i know) and i stop letting myself enjoy things. however i'm trying to mentally slap myself when that happens and listen to something that brings me up or makes me move. recently i've been finding a lot of remixes of songs from when i was a kid which has me thinking about that time in my life and the styles i enjoyed then verses now and letting myself play in that space.
dude on the motorbike reminds me of this pic that I saw a while ago

I am not great at using pictures as inspo, whether that's photos of outfits or colour palletes etc
maybe I should make more effort to do something like saving cool images just because the vibes are right
I do think this would just end up with me having big albums of images on my phone that I never look at though
This pic is burned into my memory and I have no clue what it is or where it came from
it's apparently a PLA soldier during a nuclear test in 1964
I like to coordinate with my living room
Most directly, I've been looking to nature for inspiration, and primarily to botanicals. The reasons for this are personal—I study nature philosophy and ecological politics, and for me, centering green in my wardrobe and taking inspiration from life are ways of honoring the work I do, respecting the object of that work, and applying it in how I present myself to others.
Looking to reference is mostly about developing a foundation to work from, developing a sense of color, texture, forms, and the relationships between them that's independent of any specific garments. I like to work with a limited palette—green, white or off-white, black—and while it's not difficult to find fits in that match that, looking to photos of nature or to art is just as informative. Thinking about how to interpret and apply what can be learned from these other sources to fashion is a generative process that I feel actually points towards the elusive 'personal style,' as opposed to simply copying a fit or the consumption of already-arranged garments. When I look at what my goals are, this provides a starting point for what might work, what's worth consideration, and what aligns (or doesn't) with my intention.
Reference can also help interrogate a specific question or problem: how might an accent color be incorporated into what I'm doing? What does it work well with? How does it show up outside of product shots? If I want to make an informed decision, it's really meaningful to be able to see how it sits alongside what I've been doing and what's informing it.
Actual fits have their place in this, and I like putting them up against non-fashion inspiration to bounce ideas off each other. In terms of my own, I'm not going to claim any of this is showing through particularly intensely in what I've posted to waywt so far, but this is a slow process, and regularly posting to inspiration helps with working through some of my thoughts and developing intentionality about how I dress.

Probably birds and botanicals tbh, also things like spiderwebs. They're all pretty common motifs in avant garde styles. In case of birds, usually very literal incorporation of feathers or the couture of present and past., along with wing like shapes on long coats and other items
A lot of Yohji also incorporates bird names for inspiration (crows and ravens especially)
Pet-tree-kor's whole design is derived from plant inspired shapes

Ephemera, cultural detritus, and in general just weird things I see or find running around that remind me the world isn’t serious

I go in nature and look at art. Usually this gives me ideas for unexpected colour combinations that I wouldn’t have initially thought of.
I find natural landscapes very interesting; especially close ups of rocky landscapes that are very sculptural. I don’t think this can be turned into a fit per se - more obvious takeaways from nature would be colour combinations. In nature I’m more after a “feeling” - I start imagining characters that would make sense in such a place and what they might be wearing.
The art can be figurative, but also abstract. If the latter it’s usually geometric patterns based or strong in colour.
Although I’m known for my inspiration albums, I don’t keep personal inspiration albums for myself. I am very good at remembering images so I don’t feel the need for them.
