Constant racism in games
Just got back to Valorant and have experienced constant racism in my games. I've reported these to Riot through the ticketing system, but have not heard back (Its been 4 days). It seems Riot doesn't care about racism if its directed at Asians.

dude just report them and mute them.
weird narrative to just invent that riot doesn't care about racism towards asians
how would they even know you're asian especially when those racist comments are more commonly directed toward black people
I'm sorry you had to deal with that. It can take up to a week to receive a response from player support, but sometimes it may be sooner. This depends on how many tickets are currently in the queue.
Cause I live in SEA? There's few to no Africans in this region. "Monkey" is typically said by East Asians (HK, China, Japan, Korea) to degrade South East Asians (Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Etc.)
Did you report them in-game as well?
Yes
You haven't received any report feedback?
Nope
Oh, I see. Are your report tickets still open?
Nope they auto-closed it saying something along the lines of "We'll take care of it". But nothing has happened
You constantly see online clips and posts of people getting swiftly penalized for being racist on western servers, but in APAC servers it feels as if its being ignored.
i've never seen clips of people getting swiftly penalized. the only times people get immediately banned is when they say commons slurs or threats
Yes and are telling people to "Eat a bat" (Common insult to Chinese for COVID) and calling people "Monkeys" not common enough?
you think people should get banned for saying the word "Monkey"?
just because "Monkey" can be used as a derogatory term doesn't make it a slur. It can also just be a normal word.
In the context you're talking about, it's pretty messed up, but an automated system can't just extract context from a message
Ok yes, but I have manually reported it and yet nothing
it takes a while. someone has to review your reports.
Also yeah I think people SHOULD be penalized for making racist remarks such as "Eat a bat"
just wait till the next day and you'll probably see that they got penalized
you need to acknowledge that many offensive remarks can also be completely innocent under other contexts. you can't just ban people who say "eat a bat".
Name 1 context where that would be appropriate. Maybe in the West thats fine but here it's obviously derogatory
people have random conversations all the time. they could literally just be talking about random animals they would eat.
Its not as common as saying "You should eat Chicken, it tastes good"
you cant just ban 3 words because they are usually offensive
then you'd be banning people using phrases under completely innocent contexts instead of just working off of the report system, which does take into account context and works.
Trust me no one would talk about eating a bat. Especially when China has since cracked down on eating wild animals
Dude, like i said, people have random conversations.
when i said a group of people could theoretically talk about what animals they'd eat, i'm referring to literally any animal, like a lion or mouse, not just ones stereotyped for China.
You're showcasing my issue exactly. Something offensive in the west may not be offensive in the east and vise versa. There should be better moderation in these servers which target common insults here specifically
Just because it isnt insulting for the west doesnt mean it should be ignored here
I didn't say it wasn't offensive. I'm saying it's not always offensive regardless of context.
Most slurs are undeniably offensive regardless of context, thus why there's an automated penalty.
Thats the thing. Its not always offensive there but it is offensive here
that's literally the exact point i'm making.
if it's not always offensive and you have an automated penalty, you'd be penalizing people who are completely innocent. that's why you report them because you have the context of the situation. the automated system doesn't.
Yes its not offensive EVERYWHERE in the world. But it is offensive ALL THE TIME here.
I would like to point out that not every report gets a notification in-game.

They prob already got a punishment by now
i'm not saying it's not offensive everywhere in the world.
I'm literally saying that, even in APAC, it still couldn't be offensive under every context. The hypothetical i keep driving in here is a group of people talking about random animals they'd eat, but that's not the only context they can use that phrase in. Yes, it's probably usually offensive, but unless it's definitely, without literally ANY context, understood as offensive, then it wont be auto-banned, but i'm literally giving you a situation where it wouldn't be.
the whole point of the automation system is get rid of stuff that is undeniably offensive and to have zero chance of banning someone completely innocent. the rest are taken care of by the report system
Do you live in EA or SEA? The chances people don't know the weight behind "eating a bat" is like the chances of people not knowing the weight behind the n word.
What if its 2 black guys sayibg that word? What if the guy meant to say "Wait is the wingman bigger?". You can never be 1000% sure, but you can be near certain.
Yes there can be false positives but you're looking in the 0.0001%. These extremely convoluted and improbable scenarios.
the N word is honestly a much larger debate than VALORANT. that's not a valorant specific issue. people debate whether it's even okay for anyone to say, whether anyone can say it, whether only black people should say it, i've seen a million arguments. i think VALORANT just has to make their stance.
i personally have never seen someone get banned for saying the N word, but definitely for the hard R.
but if you type a slur on accident, you're still saying a slur. maybe you should look at what you type before you send.
there really arent many auto-ban words that i know, which is why you should just mute and use the report system. you don't need an automated system to just penalize people.
Exactly, in the US it is such a big debate. Even though people here know somewhat about the cultural context we dont fully grasp it. Just like we cant fully grasp the context of slurs in thr West, so can't the West for the East. But that doesn't mean that just because it isnt seen as 1000% racist in all scenarios in the West, it shouldn't be banned in the East
alright clearly this debate about the automated system is going nowhere, but you shouldn't try to rely on the automated system. people can purposefully misspell words or add letters to words or just be creative in general. it happens all the time all around the world for auto-banned words.
there's still another solution that has the same outcome: you can just mute them and report them. you dont see their offensive messages and they penalized in a short amount of time
Heres the thing: is he penalized? No I checked his tracker.gg earlier today. So there is no auto detection and riot support has been equaly helpful
Agree to disagree about the automated system. But even the manual system is flawed
it's been under 3 hours since your post, but i'm going to believe you report them well before your post, so maybe like 4 hours.
that's not a lot of time. you're not the only one reporting people.
nvm it's been 3 hours
Again I reported them 4 DAYS ago
The game happened 4 DAYS ago
oh whoops mb
bad at reading apparently
They prob got a chat restriction
you can't queue comp if you're chat banned
oh?
yikes
i concede on the omen. i have no idea
the chamber on corrode, tho, it has been 3 hours, so no conclusions to be made there
Ok yes I agree
My best guess for Omen is related to what 4vga said: Even you're playing on APAC, technically speaking, they couldn't know for certain you were Asian, despite the region obviously mainly being Asians.
another likely case is that maybe that would've been their first offense, which might mean they didn't get penalized but they could've gotten a warning.
If you live in SEA arenβt you playing with players in the same region?
So that would make them Asian too?
SEA and EA have vastly different cultural backgrounds
