I set power options to sleep when plugged in if I close laptop lid.

I selected the sleep option in the start menu.
This morning, I open the laptop lid and only my external monitor comes on, and I login using that display.
I close the laptop lid again and re-open it and both displays come on.
Reproduced again just now.
I sleep again using start menu option.
I disconnect external monitor.
I open laptop lid and display does come up after a few seconds after laptop lid has been opened. I was just about to press the reset button to boot again, but didn't need to.
I unplug external monitor.
I select sleep from laptop display start menu again.
I plug external monitor in again while laptop is in sleep mode.
I press a key to come out of sleep.
Only the external monitor displays a login display.
