High Skill Level Clothes - Topic of the day 8/18/25
You'll see or hear "wear what you like" around the Discord, but what happens when what you like takes more skill than usual? What even is a "high skill level" item of clothing? What makes it so difficult to wear in your eye? (size, color, material, context, etc.). If you manage to do so, how do you put that shit on and style it beyond "girl just put it on"? (Idk but I love this fit, gave her a follow)
Ok now thinking about it a bit,
If this is about loud/daring pieces,
In my experience, more simple pieces aren’t necessarily always easier to style
If it’s about impractical/high upkeep things where effort is needed to just wear them there’s a line I draw at like a certain point
Even if it’s hand wash only if I can have it looking good with a steamer that’s all I need
And if it’s things that take a long/are impractical to put on your body (lots of laces/straps) it can get annoying but I don’t mind it too much bcs it looks really cool
There are def a lot of things I’m missing here but just my 2 cents
I‘m a low skill dresser and that’s okay too
just put that shit on
Do the opposite of adaptive clothing, make it as hard to take those pants off in an emergency as possible
If I can’t daydream a fit and make it happen it’s outside my skill level. I do find that the more you daydream, the more you passively absorb inspiration and engage in the waywt process then higher skill fits seem to come naturally. The top tier stuff that requires focus and conscious thought will forever be out of my reach.
thinking in 3D isn't easy
I'm a fan of rugged fabrics just because I know I am a forgetful and clumsy person, and I'd simply be to anxious wearing anything delicate or hard to wash. I like buying wool sweaters and durable pants because I know stains can always be patched over and holes can be darned, and I'll admire fine flowy silks from afar
as far as pieces that are hard to style I feel like to me that means you need to work a lot to match the rest of your outfit to the piece, and stuff like that simply isn't a good investment personally right now. But I understand the appeal
eh i've mixed in rather flows and rather rugged fabrics before - can make a relatively simple fit more interesting
yeah I would consider flowy thinner materials less as hard to style and more as hard to care for
not practically
i spend most of my time inside
but I like to imagine my outfits could survive whatever could happen
eg ocbd + rayon pants, silk shirt + chinos - as long as there's something to the juxtaposition and you're not like tumbling into brambles you're usually fine

even if in reality I live a pretty silk and pleated issey pants friendly lifestyle
you are right the contrast is really nice
