What does DPI even do?

I've got this new mouse (razer deathadder essential) And there is an option to change the dpi but I have no idea what the dpi does, I've had the same default dpi since the past few weeks/since I got the mouse. Please enlighten me.

DPI(dots per inch) is how many "steps" the mouse reports when you move it one inch. DPI is a factor in how fast your sens in. Your sens is multiplied by your DPI giving you your eDPI(effective dots per inch) which is your cross hair speed. If this is confusing sorry and I'll try clearing it up
