What is the Dot com and AI bubble, why are we saying history is repeating?
Hello, quick question, was reading a bit about the "AI bubble", I saw this terms quite often this week. From what I've understood there was another "bubble" in the year 2000, the dot com bubble, can someone explain the history behind the "bubbles", why are we saying that history is repeating itself with the AI bubble pls

Think of the AI bubble (and the .com bubble) literally. What happens to a bubble that gets too big? It pops and is gone. That's what we're talking about.
The .com bubble was when the world wide web was new and everyone was getting in on the web biz. It was new and the hottest thing. But the more people went .com, the bigger the bubble. Until it got too big and burst. Then the world wide web wasn't the hip/hot place to be. It was just there.
Same with AI. It's literally everywhere. And it's cOmInG fOr YoR JoRbS! Just like "a .com website will kill physical stores". It won't, but people don't understand that. So they hype up the hype even more. Until the bubble can't stay together anymore and 💥 goes the AI bubble. Suddenly it won't be everywhere. You won't hear about it every 3 seconds. It'll just be a thing that people use, but it won't be "replacing everyone" anymore.
oh ok I see, thanks for the explanation, really appreciate !
To add a little extra info here, the reason for the bubble to potentially pop is basically $$ (money). If VCs suddenly stop investing on AI companies, the bubble pops because there's no more money to pay for inflated salaries and computation costs.
Which then floods the job market with unemployed engineers
and surplus hardware for the taking, if you are an oportunist
not to mention that many of these ais are just cost
the only one that will come out looking decent is nvidia, who's selling gpus hand over fist
oh, the tech world is messy right now 😭
very
nvidia's revenue has been mostly ai
it's crazy
you think a 5090 costs as much because it's worth it?
why nividia gpu specifically? do they have some tech that's great for ai and not offered by amd?
oh talking about gpus, 5090 is extremely expensive
nah, it costs that much because it's taking profits away from the fabrication time for ai chips
software
cuda is used everywhere
also, they have the most performant gpus
ah okay okay
also, cuda is a lot faster than opencl as well
and whatever amd's equivalent to cuda is
for amd to compete with nvidia, they will need software better than cuda, with better performance and flexibility than cuda, the gpus have to be faster than nvidia and the cost has to be lower
oh, the tech world is messy right nowThe Web will always find its way. That's why it's great to be on Kevin Powell's discord and not in some AI hype influencer one. 🙂
