What warm jackets are good for winter besides ski jackets?
What do you normally wear in winter?
I'm looking for outwear that is:
- warm
- not overly formal but looks good over button ups
- not overly casual/workwear but looks good over t shirt
Any suggestions for brands to look into? Pic one is something that looks warm to me but I don't know what it is. Second pic is a coat I recently thrifted but I'm not sure how warm it will be.

i usually wear big wool balmacaans or other wool overcoats
i wouldnt layer over a tshirt if warmth is your goal
warmth comes from layers. but it’d probably help if you share your local climate, how cold does it get?
Ll bean / woolrich / Pendleton / Ralph Lauren are all reputable brands that do outerwear that will match your demands and are available cheap and plentiful second hand.
Or a milsurp/repro peacoat, or milsurp/repro m51 jacket + liner.
quilted stuff can get pretty warm, especially with thermal layers underneath, but for my climate i would want outerwear longer than that coat you thrifted to keep me warm. but maybe its warmer winters where you are.
like new yorks winters
what coat you got?
Several and you probably won't like how much they cost. Mainly I wear these in winter:
* Kapital Tall Ring Coat in Cotton (often with a down liner underneath)
* SEH Kelly Balmacaan in Grey Donegal Wool
* Frizmworks Karakoram parka
Plus a couple of technical rain jackets/shells.
yea good jackets are expensive
in winter i normally wear a sweater bc i live in california
you can shove one of these under a coat or jacket and be warm in NYC winter, even with just a tee under https://www.uniqlo.com/us/en/products/E470067-000/00?colorDisplayCode=67&sizeDisplayCode=003

I really like Duffle Coats. If it's really cold I wear an aran sweater under mine.
Here's some good pictures, though everything modeled here is going to be a bit more dressed up. https://alittlebitofrest.com/2021/03/14/the-duffle-coat/

All I need now is a red bucket hat in order to essentially Disneybound my favorite bear. It’s just so cozy!
How do you wash the balmacaan? I have a second hand one coming in and I dont know if I'm supposed to handwash it or bring it to a dry cleaner
