Guild Wars (1) – game downloads file then exits
I just got Heroic to see if I can run Guild Wars (1). I ran the installer, apparently successfully, then had to manually set the game executable, but when I run that, it downloads a file then exits. Log file attached.
Has anybody gotten Guild Wars to run on macos Sequoia? Happy to provide additional information as needed.

this looks like a game that might run better with wine-crossover + dxvk(?)

Well, I tried the demo of CrossOver to install Guild Wars 1, and that works from Heroic, but I am getting like 4fps on my M1. There must be some optimization I could do but at least it is working. I have never really mucked with Wine that much. I don't know anything about dxvk.

i meant the built in version of wine-crossover that you can install in heroic

I restarted in Heroic and tried that, but I just get an error now saying CrossOver bottle "Heroic" does not exist. Also, in CrossOver app itself, I tried DXVK and the game opens with a black screen. D3DMetal and DXMT work, but I have no idea how to set up to use those in Heroic, there is no UI for that that I could find. I will keep poking.
I have it working in Heroic now with WineDevel-10.14. Still no idea how to specify D3DMetal or DXMT (or even find out what it's using), but it seems to run the game ok.
Thank you for the advice

heroic and crossover (the app) essentially work together like this:
you tell heroic which crossover bottle to use, and it will use whatever settings are inside of that bottle (so if the bottle is set to high res mode, msync, d3dm, etc. it will use whatever that crossover bottle is set to use).

That makes sense. If I need CrossOver to edit the D3DM/DXMT/DXVK settings, though, I might as well just buy and use that, no? I'm just glad to be able to run Guild Wars, though. 🙂

you don’t need crossover to edit dxvk, heroic’s bundled wine-crossover (and wine-devel) has dxvk with it that you can manage from within heroic
d3dm and dxmt do require crossover however (although you can get dxmt without it, just gonna be harder to manage since you’re doing it yourself and not having an app handle it for you)

Guild Wars doesn't work with DXVK (it uses DirectX 9, not sure if that's relevant but I noticed it while running the gmae) so I guess I am stuck.

Trying now to figure out to run winecfg from Heroic with Guild Wars in the crossover bottle. So far have not found any button or widget to launch it from Heroic.

manage the winecfg from crossover itself

Guess I'm buying CrossOver and just using that, then! Thanks for the info.
