Travel coat for Japan in December?

I'm planning a trip to Japan in early December and realized I don't have a good coat/jacket for the situation. The average temperature seems to be around 4°C and 12°C or 39–54°F, which is probably not cold enough to justify the amount of space the big wool Montgomery duffle I usually wear in winter would take up in a suitcase. Usually I'd consider a leather jacket, and I'm told the weather is normally dry, but the idea of traveling without a jacket that can handle rain makes me nervous. The other jackets I already own are probably too light for the weather. To avoid overpacking I should find something versatile enough to wear either casually with jeans or at a fairly nice dinner. Any suggestions?

Hi @waffles! For better answers, include: - Reference pictures - Budget in numbers - Specific measurements - Openness to buying secondhand and/or online - Location: country/continent is fine - Timing/urgency

why not just use an umbrella?

They sell cheap almost disposable umbrellas in every convenience store there and most people use them.

honestly, I always worry a leather jacket will get wet even with an umbrella, but I should probably be less precious about it since there's not much reason to expect rain to be very heavy if there is any.
