Portable monitor home setup
Well, firs things first is actually getting that monitor. Having one on my mind and need to save up money for it.
Once I get that monitor I would like to setup some sort of "homeserver" so my raspberry pi connected to my monitor can access my laptop.

Will send my laptop specs later.
the raspberry pi 5 gpu can only handle 1080p 60hz for video decoding
now-a-days, most software uses video compression for streaming the screen
except vnc, but if you're buying a 1080p 144hz display, it means you expect to game on it
I wont game on it, that version was just cheaper then the higher resolution one of the same model.
I think I would prefer if it's touchscreen then I could potentially also use it as a standalone tablet if my raspberry pi is connected to it.
But this is good to know.

This is interesting, but I think I just want a portable monitor.

Also interesting and lot cheaper.
I'm not quite sure what your use case is. What's the question?
You want a tablet that you can carry around? What are you trying to do?
No, atm just looking for a portable screen. Which I potentially can connect with a Raspberry pi 5 so that screen could be used a tablet perhaps.
But what are you doing with it? What's your use case? Is this for work? Is it a smart home monitor?
I would not recommend gaming over wifi. Might be possible but like with bluetooth headphones, a wire is just so much less hassle
honestly, it might be cheaper to just buy a tablet
The main goal is to have a second screen for my laptop, as a bonus I could use it as a tablet connected to my raspberry pi 5. I already have a raspberry pi 5 so that's not an extra cost.
Not gaming, just general stuff. Like programmering or netflixing at most.
I still think purchasing a portable monitor is cheaper then purchasing a tablet
So where's the keyboard for programming?
I have an old one still.
My first keyboard.
And my only one.
You plug that into the monitor or what? And mouse?
The only thing I don't have is a monitor.
It feels like you're just building a laptop with extra steps
Look, I would love to use it as a tablet with the things I have.
What about a convertable laptop then
I already have a laptop, and it will become more expensive then purchasing a portable monitor.
Also should be able to use a normal secondary screen to my laptop.
Sorry but I don't think this is gonna be a great experience
You want to put together a poartable monitor, a raspberry pi and a wired? keyboard into a jerry rigged laptop to connect remotely to your existing laptop?
Why not just carry the laptop? That's portable already
I'd understand if you just want it to be a tv basically but your use case of programming flips that
This feels like one of those situations where trying to save money in the short term is more expensive in the long term because this setup is not going to last very long. You'll be tired of it in a year. If you invest in a good setup now that you can then run for 8 years, you're gonna be better of

This is how you can use your tablet or ipad as a second monitor.
In this video I show you how to do this over wifi and also how to do it using a USB cable.

a cheap tablet is infinitely more useful than a portable display
I agree. I think a portable display can have a use if you treat it as just that - a portable display. No input whatsoever. Pass it around in a class room so kids can watch some animation or something without them being able to play with it
We also use a cheap samsung tablet mounted to a wall as a smart home interface. Worked for many years now. Only had one bulging battery so far :)
How can you pass it around and watch some animation if it isn't connected to anything.
A portable monitor on it's own isn't functionable. You need it connected to a pc/laptop.
oh so it's even more useless
i thought it would connect to some other device
In that case i really can't think of a use case for it right now. It's just a monitor with a different stand then? Because my monitor is also "portable" if i unplug it
It would be a second monitor, with the potential to do some light work on it remotely using a raspberry pi 5.
Many people who have setups with 2 or 3 monitors, you gonna tell them those are useless too?
I don't need a full tablet, I just thought it would be fun to thinker with it so it's usable as a (similar to a) tablet. I already have all the components except for the monitor itself, which I would be mainly using to improve development experience when having the browser and my IDE open.
I don't have the space to have a fixed monitor with mount on my deskt.
A portable monitor will fit.
My question is, is it cheaper then a portable monitor. Cuz I found one that does everything I need it to do for under €100.
The price is the main reason I go for a portable monitor.
Cuz I do believe a tablet is gonna end up more expensive then a portable monitor.
Also I think I tried something similar with my old ipad which I don't have anymore, and it didn't worked to well iirc.
the best thing is to go to a physical shop and try the tablets there
I am sure that a tablet is objectively more "useful", but I think the price is gonna be higher.
That's the main reason I started looking for a portable monitor.
you can have a 40€ tablet or a 130€ tablet
and they will perform differently
I suppose it's worth checking out.
if it will perform to your taste? that's up to you
and as you said: it will be much more useful
If I am looking for a tablet might as well look for one that could potentially be used for sculpting as well. Not the main goal but if it's possible within the pricetag it's worth checking out.
try it at the store
I will be going to Mediamarkt on Saturday I hope. Will ask them as well with portable monitor vs tablet. The thing is the screen is the import part here, I just believe I can get a much nicer screen with a portable monitor vs with a tablet for the same price. Cuz with the tablet you're not only paying for the screen but all the other components as well.
