Games won’t launch after updating Bazzite to Fedora 43 – D3D11 GPU error

Hi, I just updated Bazzite to Fedora 43 and since then I haven’t been able to launch any games. When I try to open them, I get this error: “A D3D11-compatible GPU (Feature Level 11.0, Shader Model 5.0) is required to run the engine.” Everything was working fine before the update.

I'm having a similar problem with Bazzite-nvidia-gnome. Games launch and play sound and occasionally have a cursor but otherwise all windows are black screen or empty/invisible windows. Nothing launches from Steam in a working state anymore. Perhaps coincidentally, the Nvidia settings app is now also mysteriously gone.

the Nvidia settings app was intentionally removed as no longer necessary But yes, several people have reported nVidia problems, and I'm not aware of an official response yet other than the general "nVidia support isn't as good"

It seems like my issue got fixed after downloading a new Proton version and switching to it. After that, I switched back to the previous version I was using, and surprisingly, it started working again. So I’m not really sure what happened — I don’t know if it’s truly fixed or if it might break again later.

Well now I also have this error with Helldivers 2. It used to work perfectly, but now it doesn't start anymore. I am getting the following error message: "GameGuard: Initialization error. Try restarting or closing all programs that may interfere and try again. Error code: 340."

this just seems like DRM doing DRM things

Well, all these errors appeared after the update. They were working this morning. :dispair:
nagito || Knight of Emilia
you can try downgrading the OS pretty easily just to make sure it's something OS related
Row
RowOP3w ago
If I already tried it and the error persists, it won't go away.
nagito || Knight of Emilia
so not really the OS then
Row
RowOP3w ago
But if it's not the system, why did everything break when I updated it?
nagito || Knight of Emilia
could be something funky with the Steam app you can try ujust fix-reset-steam
Row
RowOP3w ago
I just tried it and nothing works, same error.
nagito || Knight of Emilia
perhaps re make the proton prefix for the game though DRM can get angry when you do that though it's already angry
Row
RowOP3w ago
I've already tried that and it didn't work.
nagito || Knight of Emilia
switching proton versions does something similar which can also make DRM angry
Row
RowOP3w ago
tried that too. Well, once again, it has magically been fixed.

What was it that fixed it? Having the exact same problem as you
Row
RowOP3w ago
I didn't do anything, and I decided to reopen it, and suddenly the anti-cheat started downloading things and fixed itself.
nagito || Knight of Emilia
not that suprising it's DRM it can stop you from playing for a while sometimes a few days & then decide to work though denuvo at least tells you

No idea, I guess you should start doing what I did: delete the anticheat folder, delete the proton prefix, play around with the proton versions, and use the ujust that @nagito || Knight of Emilia sent me. Another thing I did was check the game files. It was sporadically fixed just because. I understand, and thank you very much, although I still think that the update has something to do with it. It's quite a coincidence that everything was decided to break on the same day at the same time after an update.

@Row did you try rebooting after games started working? Someone was doingtroubleshooting and had games temporarily working, but they broke after a reboot again.

cry I'm going to try

well the Steam launcher/installer is updated with the system this is the program that runs when you run Steam via the terminal or the icon or whatevr if Steam is installed it launches it otherwise it installs it but most of Steam is stored in your user's home folder i think ujust fix-reset-steam preserves games & nukes Steam's folder effectively reinstalling Steam when it next runs though i don't know exactly what it does i do know something weird there are times when Steam somehow broke in such a way that running the launcher/installer wouldn't start it but running the actual(non installer) launcher directly worked fine the actual launcher is ~/.local/share/Steam/steam.sh as i recall as i've heard the installer/launcher just runs steam.sh

@Row was never seen again after rebooting 😔
Row
RowOP3w ago
Well, everything is working fine for now. I just restarted it and everything is working.

And you're not sure of a specific step which caused it? Thus far, the only people who've reported DX12 not detected, or graphics card not detected, and then "it works" seem to have some version of "I have no idea why" There has to be a switch getting flipped, or an update happening, or a file filled out...something 🤔

Ok tried it on mine and this seemed to fix it Thank you so much @nagito || Knight of Emilia !
nagito || Knight of Emilia
the weird part i was getting to is i've seen times when the steam laucher/installer won't launch Steam while steam.sh does it seemingly without issue
