MSFS X not loading
Bazzite was recommended for steam games and MSFS:X was on the list as working. So, I install bazzite, open Steam after install complete, download/install my MSFS:X and two things occur:
ActiveSky attempts to run and it wants to know the location of MSFSX and when I point to /var/home/... it cannot see the .local and when I cancel no MSFS. I read, I try something and I get the disclaimer/EULA screens for MSFSX, I get a splash screen, but then the app stops running. I added the option for a log file, but it makes no sense.
I really want off MS. I again read, I tried different proton(s) with same effect. The drive is not NTFS so, what can I do to trouble shoot and hopefully get this game running in Steam on bazzite.

the protonDB reports for it are kind of all over the place ๐ฉ

isn't ActiveSky just a weather plugin though?
what do you mean with 'on the list as working' btw?
Yes, and whenI checked they did not have a linix option so I was just going to do this without. I was surprised when it popped up. I may just try a complete wipe and install of OS etc
I'll take a look at that db, I was not aware.
is the FSX installation from another computer though?
In my instance, I'd get a splash screen then it would just quit.
interesting qtn. Originally I installed on Win, ran it on Win, but this is a new install on bazzite...would something carry over?
is it one of the addons that you purchased from the steam store?
I own the game myself but I haven't ever been able to get it to work properly, even on Windows, and I moved on to MSFS2020
I've used MSFS since, well way back. I switched to steam MSFSX as that was my current a few years ago. Was not ready, PC wise, to upgrade.
Had no issues on a Win box....was hoping this would be (smoother)...
I am starting to think that it may be better to spin up a tiny Win11 and use that for flight sim. I don't mind getting in the mud (I'm a Software developer), but not so much on gaming.
unfortunately the game is rated Silver on ProtonDB (which means it has problems) but I would recommend reading through the reports, perhaps you can find something useful there
I will do that...I already saw a couple of options to try. I can switched back to MS OS. I may even say Win 10 jsut for that and still keep Linux and primary home (all other PCs are linux). I thank you for the input.
I may look at xplane as it seems more OS agnostic. Having browsed the DB, yeah, I see MSFSX is not really good for this set up.
like some people are saying that it's not working with Vulkan at all and that they need to use openGL translation
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 works great
it's the successor to FSX
Ah...yes...I am considering that. I have a nvidia GEFORCE RTX GPU so I think 2020 will work fine. All SSD drive and A LOT of RAM so...maybe its time ๐
what gpu do you have?

your cpu is a bit weak but the graphics card is good
lol fsx doesn't work for me either haha
just a splash screen and then it dies
My plan was to run a three monitor set up (tied this in X on Win 10 and it worked). I'm not looking for max graphics, just fun flying . I recently bought a yoke and throttle quandrant...I use to be a PPL and this is a way to still "fly"
If that worked, I spring for the rudder petals. The goal was to get back to real flying again.
yes...that is exactly what happens now.
oooooooooo
Okay, I have a plan, I will back step to Win so I can finish my new home step up and upgrade to 2020 there . then try again on linux

wait waht!?
i used the launch options from the first dude on protondb
this:
PROTON_USE_DXVK=1 PROTON_HIDE_NVIDIA_GPU=0 WINEDEBUG=-all WINEDLLOVERRIDES="d3d9=n;d3d10=n;d3d10_1=n" WINE_DISABLE_VULKAN_OPWR=1 DXVK_HUD=1 %command%
ye

i managed to load into a flight
trying now

:/
that is interesting as I don't get that with MS.
it launched on my 1660 TI
blank fonts

and it seems stuck at 15 fps
perhaps it's trying to use your igpu or something
I tell ya what...I'm going to not put much more into this for now. It is not critical and I can revert. Really, thank you for your help and interest
okay...hmmmm...
are you on the bazzite nvidia image?
To be honest, I don't know. I DL'd what was on the website
rpm-ostree status output please?Okay, I see...went to bazzite WP and see a series of questions on what type of OS....I will check to see, but if it is the same...for now I'll step back...rather fly then root around command lines...I do that duringt the week ๐

yea that's the correct image
and here ya got me in command line (lol)
how about
switcherooctl?I watched a YT video today of a woman who had to land an airplane after the pilot (her dad) passed out. When I am in Linux world, I am like that girl getting instructions from ATC. Pilot DeBrief if you look it up.

hold on...
it's like it's not finding any of your gpus or something
confusing

which version of proton are you using? I'm using GE-10-18
I cannot believe it.
ooooooh nice
I switched proton to 9.04
from which version?
Experimental
I am able to select planes and location...sooo.
well..maybe noty...Tried to open a flight and got a black screen and a white box...progress?
oh i figured out why it's running at 15fps lol

probably just loading scenery

Ah...let it take time...hold on I will try
again
for me it loads in seconds ๐ฅน
is it on a SSD drive?
yes...main drive is SSD...this acts like a lock up. I turned down the graphics settings but I do have a wifi connection that is low connection.
I may try running a wire to the box just to see.
perhaps try a newer proton? ge 10-18 is what I'm running the game with
you can get ge-proton from protonplus
I put up system processes and I see steam is hitting the network and it is the only app showing

idk perhaps it's downloading something
okay...I have to step away now, but I will do two things, wire up the PC to see if it is a DL issue and I'll look at GE-proton. I did a search and found it is a multipler step process to get in to steam but IU'll try
it's not complicated at all, you just open Proton Plus, click download on the Proton you want, wait until finished, and restart steam

I'm not sure how that would impact FSX though, doesn't the game run offline?
okay, dumb ? how do I open proton plus...web page?
yes...it should
search for it in the app menu, it should be preinstalled

got it, but yeah, my DL to this PC is bad, I need to move it or wire it.
I do have to step away, but man, I am grateful for your help. I will let you know if this works.
if it's any consolation, most games aren't as hard to get to work as this ๐ฅน in 90% of cases it's just press install and play. there's always outliers though, such as this
MSFS2020 has some downsides compared to FSX, such as extremely long initial download time (~10h) which must be done outside of Steam (what you download from steam is just a launcher) and it requires something like 200GB of space, and eats a lot of internet on top
absolutely gorgeous visuals though
It helps...I'm shutting down the PC, rerouting some stuff and starting back up. This will give me a better wireless connection and even a cable reach. I feel that screen is a download issue. I'll ping you with results and again, thank you for your input.
probably 50% of that was just download time :TS3Calm:

if you ever need to install it on another computer, you can save a ton of time by copying the files over, point the installer to them, and it'll find them, saving you hours of download time
Well, I had a screen shot...I ran some wire to my PC and that was it. The dl was taking timre and with a wire connection, I got to fly. Now, I tried to change the res to fit my monitor (default had it black on the sides like 4:3) and it did not seem to change, even after restart of Steam. Since I want to go three monitors this may not work, but it was cool to get it working with bazite. Thank you.
Still could be monitpr/gpu/linux issue and menu items in prog don't show text so...not ideal. I do want to go to 2020, this was just a get back into it moment.
