Fine for months, and now, freezing up.
I've had Bazzite on my ROG Ally (original) for months, it's been great, very smooth. so it's a surprise it's suddenly freezing up on various games. the first one I noticed it just hung at the startup screen, I couldn't select new game or options, it just played the music and hung there.
then there started to be other things. and now it just froze up hard in the middle of my old favorite game Ark, froze the image onscreen and eventually crashed back to startup screen. I tried to restart the game and then it froze on the starting menu. no good. ๐
it was so good for so long, I almost forgot it wasn't mainstream..and now it's crashy and I get to start looking for solutions. ๐

have you tried rolling back (choosing the previous boot version, like Bazzite 42)?
...Haven't tried anything at all yet. I was actually just looking at the logs.
I'm willing to try But I would need more guidance than that. I don't have the first clue how to roll it back.
There should be a boot menu, let me see if I can find some docs
After you reboot, do you see multiple options like this?
Rolling Back System Updates - Bazzite Documentation
Bazzite is a custom image built upon Fedora Atomic Desktops that brings the best of Linux gaming to all of your devices.
(screenshot at the top)
If so, you can pick an older version, hit enter, and test it.
If that doesn't help, there are documents about rolling back here: https://docs.bazzite.gg/Installing_and_Managing_Software/Updates_Rollbacks_and_Rebasing/bazzite_rollback_helper/
e.g. you can run
brh list to see a list of imagesI haven't seen that before, but I don't think I've ever watched it actually reboot.
But it's bedtime and I will have to try that tomorrow. I did not expect such a quick response
You probably have to press an up or down arrow fast after rebooting
if the menu doesn't show up, then check the other docs or ask in #๐ฎbazzite about changing to an older version for now
Arrow? This is a handheld gaming system with Two sticks and a D-pad.
๐
maybe #๐ฎbazzite can help choose an older version for a gaming device then, my bad
Oh. But I do have a vague memory. When I was installing it, I held down the volume button, I think.
Lol. I appreciate the help though. I just have to figure out the mechanisms.
Fyi you can rollback through handheld daemon, no need to figure out how to get to grub. You can do it from gaming mode too. And i would recommend to check free storage, i've seen reports of bazzite misbehaving when under 1gb was free on the boot drive
Lol. I gave it two terabytes, so it's really only about half full.
As for rolling back from within Bazzite or within gaming mode, I haven't figured it out.
Handheld daemon
..I'm not actually sure what you mean by that.
But I did a quick search and found. rpm-ostree rollback
You don't need a terminal
Open handheld daemon from gaming mode
Then go to the updates tab, select rollback
You've said it three times and I still don't know what you mean. What is handheld daemon? I know what a daemon is But what am I pressing, clicking, tapping, etc.?
Its like the basic ui for managing your entire handheld in bazzite
Double tap button that opens the right steam side menu
You said you're been using it for months so assumed you were familiar with that
Have you never done things such as change rgb etc
I plug it into the TV. So I just don't mess around with those settings. I never had to. It just worked.
ahh
Also, I took it off the dock and I still can't find the thing you're talking about.
I found the Steam menu and I found the...purple menu. And nothing about updates or rollbacks
There's the standard check for updates button, but I haven't found anything else.

Well the good news is I found the right menu but mine has a lot less stuff on it than yours does.
Pic?
AH! I found it, I found it. It expands.
Which version are you currently on?

That actually doesn't make any sense. Those numbers are the same.
Aw shit
2 identical deployments
Uhm, try change version?
Did the problems start after the Nov 2 update?
It still told me it could have roll back and reboot. So we're going to find out.
It won't do anything because the 2 images are the same
Try change version
There is no change version, only change branch and I don't know what that means.
Change branch

Ohhh I see.
Do you remember when was the last time you updated before the last update?
mid-october?
Changing branch means I'm going from stable to testing or unstable.
I really don't remember but it's been a while.
We only want to change version right now
?
Could be.
oh!

Try the last stable-42
42-20251019
K
90 days but i don't think that's necessary right now
Don't change branch, stay on stable
like so

Yup It's downloading now.
I also got 2 identical deployyments:dispair: its possible that larger updates reset them both, like the Fedora 43 update
Hah It's waiting right there. The game that started the freezings.

Rebooting now.
Ok! Let us know how it goes.
Well, that game still freezes up right at the splash screen.
I will try some ark and see.
You can try going back further as well, up to 90 days in total
Does only the game freeze or the whole systsm?
Just the game. Usually.
Well, so far so good with ark. Soon I will try reinstalling Night in the Woods and see if that helps.
how are you doing? is everything working on 1019?
so far so good! I haven't reinstalled Night in the Woods yet cuz LIFE, but ...sooon...
