Steam showing "Playing Terraria" when I'm in tModLoader

And my friend can't join me because of that

is there any permanent fix???

There is no fix; this is a deliberate feature that Re-Logic requested from the tModLoader dev team

If joining via Steam doesn’t work (although it should), use an IP server

Read the following instructions if you want to start a modded server:
IP Server
1) Go into your install folder. If you don't know where that is, do

2) Run start-tModLoaderServer.batstart-tModLoaderServer.bat
2a) If you're running a 1.4 server, select nn for Steam server
3) When prompted to port-forward, enter yy
4) Select a world in the command prompt
5) Once the world has finished loading, the server host will join the IP 127.0.0.1127.0.0.1 ingame
6) Everyone else will have to join the server host's Public IPv4 address, which you can find by going to https://whatismyip.com

1) Go into your install folder. If you don't know where that is, do

2) Run start-tModLoaderServer-steam-friends.batstart-tModLoaderServer-steam-friends.bat (1.3 tModLoader) or start-tModLoaderServer.batstart-tModLoaderServer.bat (1.4 tModLoader)
2a) If you're running a 1.4 server, select yy for Steam server
3) Select a world in the command prompt
4) Once the world has finished loading, the server host will join the IP 127.0.0.1127.0.0.1 ingame
5) Everyone else can join via Steam invites, though they must have the game already running before accepting the invite
